Our Verdict

Ok so we need to compare this to two offers:

When comparing to the historical high with this offer you save $85 from the annual fee and get a $200 statement credit. So it’s really $285 in cash + two free nights at a category 1-5 property vs  100,000 points. When comparing to the current bonus it’s basically $200 statement credit + two free nights vs 75,000 points (both waive the annual fee).

Marriott’s award chart looks like this:

So if you’re going to redeem for a category five property you’d normally pay 50,000/40,000 points anyway. In that case I would really prefer this $200 statement credit offer as you’re getting $200 vs an extra 35,000/25,000 points (when comparing to the current bonus). If you’re going to redeem for lower tier properties (especially category 3 or under) then the free night certificates lose a lot of their value vs points.

The other thing to consider is that Marriott points also transfer to SPG at a rate of 3:1. Personally I think if you can find category 5 properties you want to stay at, then this statement credit offer is better than straight points. In saying that I don’t really value Marriott points that highly and I do love cash. It’s also worth remembering that finding good category 5 properties isn’t exactly easy so for a lot of people the points option will be better.

Keep in mind post people won’t be eligible due to the Chase 5/24 rule. Make sure you read these things everybody should know about Chase cards before before applying or asking questions in the comments. If you’re not instantly approved keep in mind Chase reconsideration.

Do you get the $200 SC after any purchase, even if it’s not a Marriott-related one? It seems as if someone who does not plan on staying at a Marriott hotel anytime soon and isn’t trying to hit the MSR could just get the card, make a single purchase and get $200 and then downgrade before the AF hits next year, or am I misunderstanding this?

Are the free nights good for 12 months? How does that work? I need free nights for June 2019. If I get the card in March, wait until June to meet the minimum spend will the free nights be good until June 2019?

Shame it’s 5/24 or I’d be all over it.

I took advantage of this offer last summer. One data point: the $200 statement credit did not appear until after the minimum spend had been met. For me, it showed up on the SECOND statement. It was not after the first purchase.

I don’t think this offer really went away, to be honest. The link that I’ve used to apply for the 200 SC / 40k@3k / noAF last summer (mid August 2017) — I got both 200 SC and 40k points — has since been showing this offer, since about September 2017 or thereabouts. Personally, I value each night at 50$ or 10k points, so, pretty happy with the 200 SC + 40k offer I got last summer, and I’d probably value even the 75k + noAF offer above this one, unless you just want the 200 SC part. But, this offer is def better than the 120k@12k one, or the old 80k + AF one. 🙂

can you tell me if chases rule’ “you are not eligible if you recieved the bonus in 24 months” does that apply to closing the card, opening the card , or recieving the bonus? and if i reopen the same card before 24 months of recieveing 2 years agos bonus and only would end up getting the bonus a few days after the statement prints lets say 24 months and 3 weeks from when i received the last bonus would i be eligible? meaning the bonus wont post till after i finish my month which is already past the 2nd year anniversary from the time i recieved that bonus would that work? thanks

I am well over the 5/24 rule, but applied just for the hell of it. This is the response I was given:

We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision by U.S. mail. This could take up to 30 days.

Should I go for this card or the CSP? I am under 5/24. Relatively new to churning. I just finished churning the CSR last month. Any other card recommendations? Thanks

You won’t be able to get the CSP if you’re currently holding the CSR due to Chase’s one sapphire rule.
