Is this (15% off apple GC) the best deal from Discover?
Nike is regularly 20%, which I use all the time. Also, there's a few others in the 15-20% range
Got tired of dealing with rotating category cards and canceled.
The struggle is real
Apple 15% is back
I just got an extra 20% when redeeming Discover cash back for a Lowe's GC. I could send a PDF of the offers I'm seeing, @6
why would you redeem Uber 15% off while you can purchase at Costco for 25% off? wait to redeem for other cards in Discover?
Costco is not free to join, so not everyone is a Costco member.
And Costco can be a long or even very long drive for some people depending on where they live.
Now, while you can buy gift cards online at Costco and redeem them virtually, I don't see why someone who lives very far from a Costco would necessarily join it only to get gift cards online, unless they're buying tons of gift cards.
The 10% off difference you state on Uber Gift cards requires buying $650 of Uber gift cards to break even given the Costco $65 membership fee, especially if you live alone and thus can't use the free household card.
And just like this Discover 15% promotion is time limited, apparently so is the 25% off Uber gift cards at Costco. So how can you be sure that those two discounts are always simultaneous?
Are you sure that this 10% difference isn't only temporary?
Just because Costco works for you does not mean that it works for everyone.
For someone who doesn't already belong to Costco, it's not clear that it would be worth it for them to join, especially if Costco is not near them, just to get an extra 10% off of Uber gift cards if that turns out to be only temporary.
When I used the "Direct link to offer" above while logged into Discover, Uber is shown at the top as 15% discount, along with Best Buy show at the top as 10% discount, both with "limited time offer" above them. But on later pages a lot of other gift cards are also shown as 15%.
And if I "sort by % value added", two cards (Bath & Body Works and Nike) come up at 20% discount, with no "limited time offer" above them. And those are the cards two that went to 30% discount in the 11/26/20 post mentioned above.
I presume that means that those other cards are always at a 15% or 20% discount?
That hasn't been explained above, but if some cards are always at 15% or 20% discount, that greatly changes the value of a special offer that's "just" 15% discount.
It's completely different than, as in the past, when there were 25% or even 30% discount offers, since those presumably were higher than any normal offers at the time.
If you use uber/uber eats often, get a Costco membership.
They have had uber GC 20% off for at least 6 months now. Every 2 or so months it gots to 25% off.
The membership has paid for itself 20x over for me.
It's 25% off right now
Let us not forget the DoC article about Uber's pricing algorithm. It knows that you're paying with a gift card or Amex credits and it adjusts its price accordingly to eliminates any discount you might receive. Don't kid yourself.
This is blatantly false. As someone that spends ~$500/month on ride shares, I've never seen this.
Not is it true that they stop giving eats promos if you have a GC balance.
Uber even when lengths to evade regulators with "greyball". I am fairy confident they would use data also to offset your custom price as Lee says.
You do know the algorithm is personalized based on your usage pattern. Just because you don't experience it does not mean it's false.
I have noticed prices higher when having a balance than when I don't.
That's anecdotal evidence, but several people report the same.
Of course, it's hard to prove for sure, who knows if the algorithm does it for specific locations, specific users, half of the time etc?
What is sure is that there's opacity in the algorithm and there's enough data to corroborate that something shady is happening some of the time.
Of course, if you're only using the gift card for Uber Eats pick-up, fine.
Nice! Been saving my rewards for something like this. Time to cash in for some Uber rides!
costco has 20% off everyday
