Discover Releases 5% Categories For Entire 2022

Discover has released their 5% categories for the year of 2022:

  • Q1: Grocery Stores and Fitness Club & Gym Memberships
  • Q2: Gas Stations and Target
  • Q3: Restaurants and PayPal
  • Q4: Amazon.com and Digital Wallets

These are nice categories. Q1 has grocery which is nice. Q2 I don’t find very useful given the REDcard already earns 5% at Target, and Gas purchases are more limited. Paypal for Q3 is nice and Digital Wallets for Q4 is nice.

  • You should consider tagging this #quarterly categories so it can easily be found when clicking on the tag in your latest Chase Post :)

  • I hear a lot about Costco. No love for BJs or Sam’s Club. BJs cream cheese filled pretzels were great. Costco doesn’t sell Italian sausage anymore which was my favorite. Their food court sucks now.

  • Do the gas stations at Costco count as warehouses or gas stations?

    I don't remember Digital Wallets for 2021.

  • Don't forget, you get 1% cashback on Target Circle if you scan your membership barcode, so 5% CB Target + 1% Pretax Cashback via Target Circle is better than 5% off with Redcard in most cases.

  • Yay for Q3! My wife’s first year began and will end in a PayPal quarter. I wish I could find a gas station that accepts credit cards for VGCs.

    • For in-store, Costco still requires the card in Apple Pay or Google Pay to be a Visa credit card or any debit card (although some folks have had trouble with Discover debit). Using Apple Pay/Google Pay just changes the "interface" but not the processing network. It doesn't seem that they support Apple Pay online, where they do accept Discover otherwise.

Still pretty stoked about this category because it does open up a lot of possibilities (and even any apps that support Apple Pay/Google Pay for in-app payments).

  • Q2 can be useful if they'd have 10% off GC deal since you can't have both the 10% off and Target card 5% unlike with Discover.
