The Offer

Direct Link (login required)

Amex is now targeting some SPG personal cardholders with the following offer

  • Get 2,500 bonus Starwood points when you add an authorized user on your SPG card and the user spends $1,000 within three months
  • Up to 10,000 bonus SPG points max for adding 4 authorized user cards

The Fine Print

  • Valid until September 30, 2017
  • Additional Cards can be added at different times but must be added by September 30, 2017 through this promotional application page to be eligible for this offer
  • The 3 month period for each Additional Card Member to spend $1,000 starts on the date that the respective Additional Card Member is added
  • Purchases made by other Additional Card Members on your Account will not count toward the $1,000 spend requirement; your purchases as the Basic Card Member will not count toward the $1,000 spend requirement
  • There is no annual fee for Additional Cards; the maximum number of Additional Cards issued on each Account is 99; Additional Card Members must be at least 13 years of age and never have had a defaulted account with American Express
  • The 2,500 bonus Starpoints will be applied to the Basic Card Member’s account within 8–12 weeks after an Additional Card Member has met the purchase requirement
  • Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. In rare instances, the period for the new Additional Card Members to spend $1,000 may be shorter than 3 months if there is a delay in receiving their Additional Cards. Also, purchases may fall outside of the 3 month period in some cases, such as a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date they made the transaction. (For example, if they buy goods online, the purchase date may be the date the goods are shipped).
  • To be eligible to receive bonus Starpoints, the Basic Card Member’s account must not be cancelled or in default at time of bonus fulfillment.
  • You must notify Additional Card Members that we may obtain, provide, and use information about them and that their use of your Account is subject to certain provisions of the Card Member Agreement

Our Verdict

Many Amex cards have targeted bonus offers for adding an authorized user. Lots of people value SPG points highly, making this one of the better offers available. We’ll add this one to our complete list: American Express Authorized User Bonuses – List Of Offers & Everything You Need To Know.

As far as we know so far, this bonus offer is being sent out on the SPG personal card, not on the business version of the card. Please correct us if you see otherwise.

Thanks to reader T. for sharing the offer and screenshot with us

The missing 7500 finally posted!
I believe everyone who added 4 AU and only received 2500 last year are getting the difference now.

The posted details:
Bonus
+7,500
05/08/2018
SPG AX SUPP CARD BONUS CNSMR

3 different authorized users spent $1000 each on 9/22. Only one 2500 bonus SPG posted. I called AMEX and the rep said there is no SPG points pending. He submitted a ticket for an investigation. Seeing from the above posts there is definitely an problem with AMEX giving out beyond the first 2500 SPG points.

No not yet. They said the investigation may take up to 8 weeks. Will call and keep pushing them.

did you MS at all? also did the pts post ASAP after spend or after statement cut?

No I don’t do MS. The 1st 2500 points posted 2 days after it showed up on my account. I did not have to wait until the statement closes. My statement will close in 5 days. Hope they’ll give me the missing 7500 points at that time.

Nothing for me either, and I talked to the SPG agent here on FT who had their Amex liason talk to Amex, but I haven’t heard back yet.

According to a comment in one of the other AMEX AU posts here on DoC, it’s been *confirmed* that you’ll get the full 20K if you applied for the AU cards separately, one-by-one. You will only get 5K if you applied to them all at once (the way the small print required, technically). This is because the offer will only be attached to the first AU card in the list.

I have no idea how we can make AMEX fix this for all of us, but it royally sucks. People who have called in only get confusion from AMEX CSRs.

I got the AMEX 20k bonus by signing up all 4 AU at the same time, so I don’t think the AU must be applies one at a time. Perhaps it applies to the 10k SPG offer? But definitely not on the 20k Amex membership reward points offer.

How did you ask for the points? Did you ask him to follow up on the bonus points to each account separately?
That’s my situation too. 4 AU (with SSN) added at the same time. All 4 cards shipped out and minimum spend reached within days of each other. Only one 2500 SPG bonus posted within a week after spending was reached. I’m not sure how long to wait before opening a ticket because:
A. 2 out of 4 AU were duplicates (I added myself as AU and my wife who was already AU as AU again) – anyone following the math that’s 6 cards with 4 unique SSN.
B. 2 out of the 4 AUs I spent $1013.90 at a grocery store… no need to spell it out.

I added 4 AU back in the end of Sept 2017 too and have not received the rest of 7500 points yet, have you received yours now?

Final Update:
My husband met his $1k spend on Thursday 9/21 and statement closed 9/22. The 2500 bonus is on the statement which printed last night. Points not in SPG account yet as of this morning, 9/25.

I am relieved that I don’t have to call AMEX and argue to get the points because of the eariler issues.

All’s well that ends well.

Thanks for the heads up on this awesome and timely AU post!

Hey guys I actually found this deal originally for the site (thank as for the hat tip Chuck) but I have a negative SPG balance on my Amex card that has this offer (my actual SPG account is not negative) because a manger accidentally credited me an additional 25k points when they posted my sign up bonus in March (best mistake they’ve ever made LOL) and he seemed unable to take them back so he said “just keep spending on the card” but no way I was going to spend $25k while getting no new points… anyways I’m figuring if I do get these 10k points they won’t actually help me because it’ll just go towards the 25,000 points I “owe them”.

Anyone have thoughts? When I spent money last time (April I think?) it didn’t give me any points and I confirmed with a manager that my balance is negative. I don’t think it’ll be an issue to close the account later seeing as it was not a return that caused this – their own manager messed up majorly.

Yeah I doubt it will help you, but at least it helps repay the balance of points owed. I’d still do the deal that way if other deals pop up you might be able to get out of negative.

Thanks Will.

I know it’s somewhat advised not to (cause the negative balance), but I planned to close this SPG and get the business instead anyways… used the Sheraton Club access this last weekend on my GF’s account and it was nice. No reason to have two AF SPG cards from my perspective (unless I’m missing something).

I hope they won’t look down upon this card/blacklist/make issues given it was their error and I have the date, time, and manager name from the phone call written down.

Even if I do this 10k, I’d have to have run $15k more through this card to be neutral. In my MS ways of about 1.2% per $1 we’d be looking at near $200 all in given the $4k for this AU activity. That is way too much to consider for me. Do think I can just close when I’m ready?

Not sure what will happen if you close with a negative balance, especially if you open a new card they might just withhold the points owed. I’d still do this AU bonus just to be safe but YMMV.

My wife added AUs to her Amex SPG and Everyday accounts. Approved for both but got a hard credit check on each request. The promo application page never mentioned this could happen. Does she stand a chance to dispute the hard pulls with Amex?

You sure about that? I’ve never heard of this before so this would be news to me and I’m guessing everyone else. They will show up on the AU’s credit reports though. Were you/she possibly confused by seeing a new account and thought it was a hard inquiry?

Charles
Charles (@guest_481703)
September 23, 2017 00:01

Absolutely and indeed shocking. In her Experian report. Under Inquiries tab, one pull on 9/15 (when AUs were added to SPG), another on 9/22 (AUs added to Everyday), with Amex as Inquirer for both. She had no new Amex credit card applications. (In contrast, I added AUs to my Blue Cash Everyday and Hilton Surpass accounts on 9/21 and as expected saw no Amex hard pulls on my credit reports.)

That’s crazy. There’s been a lot of movement with Amex lately so while it’s surprising I’m not completely surprised (if that even makes sense). Hopefully we’ll see more data points as time goes on if this continues to be a new trend and if so I’m sure DoC will keep tabs.

If these AU offers carry a risk of hard credit pulls, they are absolutely no bargain! We can get 7,500 SPG pts by providing a referral to the same family member or friend.

Heads up guys, I sent some information to the site. Long story short, wife and I added each of our kids to each of our SPG accounts, for a total of 4 new cards. Spent $1000+ VGC on each of the 3 of the 4 cards at Kroger, $1000+ VGC at CVS. The 3 transactions from Kroger, posted SPG points to my SPG account labeled AX SUPP CARD BONUS, 4 days after posting to the card. The transaction from CVS has yet to post. I have since made another translation, at Kroger for $1000, on the card that didn’t post the bonus from CVS.

Anyone else have any DP’s on this?

Well, I completed the spend and went over by quite a bit over the past weekend on all 4 cards and so far have only received 2,500pts in my SPG account. I hope SPG doesn’t think they were duplicates and discarded them.

Did you MS the bonus? I’ve received bonuses on 3 of 4 AU cards with Kroger MS, the CVS transaction didn’t post. For reference, all Kroger transactions were on separate days, but bonuses posted to my SPG account exactly 4 days after posting on each AUs card. Went out tonight and bought $1000+ VGC at Kroger on the card that didn’t post, we’ll see in 4 days if it was because of CVS.

No MS, legit spend at Walmart only. Did you have any batches of points post at Starwood on the same day? I’ve only had a single 2,500 post and all spend was completed Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

FWIW two cards never arrived originally so they had to resend them. Still doesn’t explain why I only received 2,500. Everything is legit so I don’t mind opening up a case, but I don’t want to and I certainly shouldn’t have to.

No, I did each card’s transaction for $1000 on separate days, the bonuses posted on the three exactly 4 days after each transaction posted, on separate days.

Hmm. At least 2 cards were complete on different days, so I should’ve gotten the points for at least 2. I’m sure once I ask them they’ll say to wait “6-8 weeks” as usual even though it should be instant. Such a pain.
