Food Lion Now Accepts Credit Card for Prepaid Gift Card Purchases

Food Lion sells $500 Visa, Mastercard, and Amex gift cards, but as of the past couple years (at least) they didn’t allow payment via credit card.

The good news is that they’ve now began accepting credit cards again. There is a daily limit of $10,000 in purchases (including fees). Up to $2,000 can be purchased with a regular cashier and beyond that will need an override.

Lots of grocery stores who stopped taking card payments due to fraud are now reevaluating their position due to the enhanced security of chip cards, or other factors, and now allow credit cards on prepaid purchases.

I just called Food Lion corporate to see if they accept credit card pays on their own gift card and the answer is no. Is this new policy only on Visa and Amex gift cards?

If a manager swipes their card the transaction will go through for $500.

It must be a regional thing as I have been buying $500 VGC from Food Lion in the NC/SC region for a while now. I have noticed that around this area its a hit or miss as customer service managers are constantly reminding the clerks at the register that the transaction has to be processed as a debt transaction. However there are many times where the clerk takes my word and never really checks once the transaction is completed. Also a small alittle note worth mentioning…in my area they are limiting the amount to only $500 VGC charge per hour. I havent tested this system by using a different card for the second $500 to see if its related to the indivudal card number or not

I’m also from nc and I went to food lion today and paid for my groceries with cash and was getting some gift cards like from bath& body and Golden Corral and I told the cashier I would be paying it with a credit card, no problem so after she rang it all up She wanted to look at card, it is a Verizon Visa card and I’ve used it everywhere then she tell me I can’t use that card Judy my debit. That’s bs

This reminds me of the deal with Giant where they were taking CC for VGC, then they weren’t, now they are again….what would prompt the change? they were missing the lost revenue and wanted to get it back?

I think it has more to do with the change of liability for chip vs non chip readers in stores. After October 2015, whichever store didnt have chip readers (or companies involved in a sale) was liable for fraud. Things are loosening back up noe that most stored have CC chip readers.

Interestingly, the 5 Food Lions in my region happily took CC for Visa and Mastercard GCs although I was rarely using it due to another grocery chain running a more worthwhile deal. Then last week decided to him the Food Lion up the road and discovered that somewhere over the last year they stopped taking CC’s. The Food Lion down the street from my house has never taken CC’s all during these last few years, it will be interesting if they post the sign. Although I typically use Food Lion for GC liquidating anyhow.

How do you liquidate GC at Food Lion? Do they sell money orders?

Yup. Relatively cheap and lot less waiting than Walmart and no limit on which GCs work.

Just came across this thread…… in part as BA has a coupon on my Amtrak card for 10% off anything at FoodLion. (up to the amount of a vgc fee)…. 🙂

And yes, amazingly, the over-priced FoodLion chain is owned by Dutch conglomerate Ahold-Delhaize — ironically the same holder of Giant (both Carlisle & Landover), Stop n Shop, & Martin’s….

Policy to accept cc’s for gc payments seems to have changed about the same time for all component grocery chains within the AD fold

Food Lion began in Salisbury, NC. It radiated outwards from there.

Mine here in VA as well, will let you charge $200. My local store, since they know me, lets me go to $300.

For a good part of last year, they stopped carrying $500 VGCs. Apparently they resumes the selling now.
