Our Verdict

When these offers come out, they usually come in bunches with other portals, but I don’t see the $1 offer on any other portal at the moment (just the $12 offer). If you see other portal offers, please let us know.

To do this offer right, you’ll have to cancel the subscription between 45 days and two months so that there’s no fee. Set yourself a reminder to cancel. Note: You need to call in to cancel.

It’s interesting that the terms seemed to have switched: in previous offers there was a limit of one per person and now the limit is per United account.

  • Subscribed late last night for WSJ and 1200 miles posted in pending this morning. Also subscribed for the Barron's offer 12 hours ago but nothing yet. I like all things $$ so I probably will get some reading out of the subscriptions but not at the regular price. Especially need those miles for my next AA travel.

  • Hey, I didn't cancel on time but I didn't even receive the UA miles? The membership is non-refundable. Who should I contact to reverse the charge?

    • I don't see how you can reverse the charge since you didn't cancel on time (maybe they prorate? not sure), but you can contact the portal for the missing points.

  • Forgot to cancel on time... but cancellation call was a breeze, suggestion if you have trouble cancelling. 1-(800)-Journal (568-7625) for the lazy.

LPT from Scott Adams - just tell them you're "Not interested" - there's no response that can be given in response to that, it always works. If you say "I don't read it enough" you open up dialog for the retention person to ask follow up questions.

For me they asked "Why?" and I said "I'm not interested" and they replied something like "Was the content not good" and I just replied "I'm just not interested." Cancellation complete, no further discussion.

    • They do try hard but if you just answer their questions with long-winded gibberish like, "yeah information so much reading sometimes but usually i don't read very much", they give up pretty quickly. :)

  • Spouse did the WSJ/Murdoch thing last year.... for the paper copy delivered. Gave us a good steady supply of starter paper for my woodstove.... ;-) which about matches my impressions of anything Rupert Murdoch touches/ruins....

Thankfully, cancellation was ez.... one phone call and no fuss thereafter.

  • To save yourself a little time: i tried to sign up using my mobile phone and the above direct link and first got stuck in a loop of signing in and getting sent immediately to flight reservation page, with no mention of wsj promo. Finally got a popup message saying the retailer (wsj) would not be able to reward/track back points unless i used a desktop or laptop.

  • When I click through the MIleagePlus portal to the WSJ site, I don't see a place to select the $1 subscription ... what am I missing? I see the $12 for 12 weeks and other more expensive subscriptions.

  • I signed up through an emailed link. There was nowhere to enter my Mileage Plus #. Hoping it links up. Anyone know if it automatically connects?
