Our Verdict

Interesting that they are giving the miles for free users too. For someone who does their own taxes, it could make sense to use TurboTax and get the free miles.

There are quite a few other mileage portals also offering bonus miles for TurboTax, including 400 AA miles, and 350 United or AS miles.

Aparently Amex has a 75K Business Gold offer after 10K spend
And a 75K Business Platinum offer after 5K spend
It might not work for everyone. Here are the links:

Please forgive my tax newbness as this is my first time filing taxes. Does the “federal” in “TurboTax Federal Free Edition” indicate that it only works for filing federal taxes and not state? Thanks

My family and I have used Turbotax the past several years. The TurboTax Federal Free Edition is free only for Federal filing. They have functionality for State filing, but you must pay for it in my experience. I think like $30ish typically. You can then decide whether you want to deal with puling all the data into your state’s tax filing process yourself, or drop the $30/whatever and let Turbotax do it for you.

Correct. For states without taxes, such as Texas, you can file completely free the first year, as long as it’s a 1040-EZ. A word of caution, I figured reuse the login the next year, I believe it will auto-populate your previous info Such as address and then by doing so upgrade you to Deluxe edition. This was definitely the case for 2011, when I made a second username.

The other caution, if you have investments (capital gains) and some other things, you can’t do a 1040-EZ and thus can’t use the free version.

TurboTax is general does a lot of other shady stuff too, such as increasing the price of you wait to file. The price you pay is when you submit (or schedule) your return – not the price when you sign up.

All things considered, I still use them and will bite on this deal. But I’m skeptical they points will never post, for some reason.
