Update 4/22/23: Another residual check was sent out now, aside from the initial payout in 2020. (ht Looney Tunes)

Airbag Class Settlement

Direct Link

The lawsuit alleges that Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, BMW, Honda, and Nissan sold vehicles containing defective inflators manufactured by Takata Corporation that could rupture and expel debris into the occupant compartment.

Each of these auto makers has separately agreed to pay tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to consumers who were affected by the airbag issue. Even those not affected can get up to $250.

Who is Eligible?

Anyone who owned or leased an eligible vehicle in the United States or territories after April 11, 2013 and through June 9, 2017.

The easiest way to see eligibility is by simply checking your VIN here.

File a claim here

How Much Will We Get?

  • If the faulty airbag somehow cost you money, file a Registration/Claim for reimbursement of the reasonable expenses you incurred related to the Takata Airbag Recall
  • If not, file a Registration/Claim for a Residual Distribution of up to $250

Note: if you still own the vehicle, you can only take part in the settlement if you first bring the car into a dealership for the Takata Airbag Recall Remedy

Important Dates

The Honda and Nissan cases are not yet available for filing claims, we’ll have to wait on dates for those.

For Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, and BMW, the court will issue a decision on October 25, 2017. You should be able to file for another year from that date.

Final Thoughts

This will hopefully amount to real money ($250) for many, many people, though it’s not absolutely guaranteed since it depends how many reimbursement claims are filed. Definitely worth filing a claim.

As noted, thus far it’s only possible to file a claim for Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, and BMW. Honda and Nissan are not up for filing yet, but it looks like they’ve recently agreed to settle too, and we should see a form available at some point in the future. We’ll try to repost this when that happens.

It sounds sensitive. Everyone won the lottery if they’re still alive reading this thread, despite a defective airbag….

Son Of a Biscuit, my VIN is eligible but I never got a notification of class action settlement in the mail. Hate leaving $$$ on the table…

As an update, I called the settlement number listed on the website today and spoke to a representative quickly to clarify how much I received since I didn’t keep track of it when they issued the previous payments. They also confirmed that the payment sent in July 2023 is the FINAL payment. I only had one vehicle in the class action settlement.

March 2020 $136
April 2023: $114
July 2023 $141.24

Total: $391.24

Glad you got your final payment! The representative i got could not confirm if I would be getting a final payment and I haven’t received it yet either. I did get the other two and she confirmed that. Hopefully still coming!

Lefty ,
What car was the claim for? I have a Honda and only got:
4/7/23: $72.04
4/20/23: $97.17

Total: $164.21 (only 42% of what you got…)

The rep just kept reading from the Agreement and couldn’t tell me if I will get anything else…

I registered for this at a prior address, back in 2017. Any clue if I can get them to send my funds to a correct address?

Going to email, but curious if anyone else has this experience.

I’m attempting to do so now – emailed them back in April the last time this was updated and they followed up 4 days later but I completely missed it. They asked for more info to locate the claim, so I just responded. I’m wondering if whoever bought our last house got the checks and cashed them.

How would they do that? They’d be in your name.

You’d be surprised where you can cash checks…I know of very shady places that’ll let you do it without ID (for a 10-12% fee).

They should have sent you physical mail to tell you were eligible. Do you not read your mail?
