Get An Additional 500 Miles (60,500 Total) On The American Airlines Barclaycard Offer [Ends January 31st, 2018]

Update 11/26/17: The direct link now shows an expiry of January 31st, 2018.

Update: The 60,000 point offer is due to expire on November 30th. I suspect this deal will end at the same time. Thanks to drew_carnegie.

Update: Now working on the 60,000 mile offer. Thanks to reader Nathan WY & Churner Club.

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • The standard bonus on the American Airlines Barclaycard is 60,000 points after your first purchase. If you use an application found in flight (basically just entering the six digit number in the above link) you get an additional 500 points.
  • One reader shared the six digit number given to them (non unique, think it’s tied to flight attendenant and I assume that flight attendant gets some sort of bonus, so feel free to share other numbers in the comments if your flight attendant does a good job. If anybody works for American Airlines, share the bonus structure in the comments as well).
    • 344744
    • 627340
  • According to this comment, the bonus structure is as follows:
    • $50 per approved application.
    • $20 bonus per application when you get 10 approved application in non-revolving two months period
    • Another $20 for 25 applications approved in the same period.

The Fine Print

  • 500 point bonus isn’t mentioned on the sign up page, but readers have confirmed it posting

Our Verdict

Obviously not the biggest improvement in offers, but every mile helps so might as well get an extra 500! As always read these things you should know about Barclaycard credit cards here. We will likely add this to our best credit card bonus page next update as well.

Hat tip to reader Charles

Some troubling stuff from the T&C: “… (the offer) may not be available if you already have or have had an account with us.”

Ken

That’s worrying. I wonder if Barclays has denied anyone under these terms.

I have a really good friend who’s a flight attendant. Greatly appreciate anyone who uses his number…

Thanks DoC!

Sure Matt, I’ll use this. Any tips or tricks when getting this card? Other than standard 40k AA miles?

Matthew
Matthew

The 10% rebate for redeeming miles is nice. Besides that, you can upgrade to the Silver card after having the account open for at least 3 months and you will not be charged the annual fee until your first year is up. Then when that happens, you should be able to downgrade the card, although some have been told closing is the only option so YMMV. Did you get approved?

Logan
Logan

Well I tried… denied. I guess 18 new accounts in last 12 months and 4 in the last week is too much? 🙂

Are there any reports of people who already have the Aviator Red getting a 2nd card?

Yes, there was a DP on /r/churning on one of the daily posts this week.

Just to be aware- I’ve had this card a week and the app/website have been down about 75% of the times I’ve tried to log in to the account. So one must have technological patience when dealing with Barclaycard right now.

Matthew
Matthew

Hmm, maybe it’s something with your computer? 🙁 I have been checking my account often since I’ve been doing the 15k spend, hasn’t been down once for me.

Anyone able to apply a code retroactively? Approved last week but card has not come yet.

Does anyone know if there is a waiting period between opening a new BarclayAA account and having just canceled the same account? I had the Aviator card for several years and just canceled last month. How long do I have to wait to open another and get the bonus?

Thanks!!!

Matthew
Matthew

I think with any card issuer, waiting 3 months should be safe, but it also depends upon your application habits/goals.

Matthew
Matthew

DoC recommends 6 months actually:

Barclaycard card’s are churnable, meaning you can get the sign up bonus on cards more than once. If you get approved, you’ll get the sign up bonus. The difficult thing is getting the card approved, you’ll need to have cancelled the previous card and usually a wait for at least six months is required. In addition it’s a good idea to be putting spend through any existing Barclaycard credit cards before applying for a new card.

DoC,

Any idea whether there’s a 50,000 miles link that accept promo code?

We probably need info from someone who recently took AA flight?

New link is http://www.myaviatorcard.com (shows 50k offer with ability to enter code)

Applied at the 40k bonus 🙁

However had a target offer of 10k for spending $750 in each of the months of May, June and July. Still quite miffed but softens the disappointment.

William, if I have the non AF Aviator card still open which was originally a US Airways card, can I get the 50k miles? It’s been way over 24 months. I don’t have a Red Aviator, but I do have an Aviator. Can you please give me any information? Thanks!

When do the points post for this card ( in other words when does barclays charge the annual fee? Is it in the first statement or the 12th statement?)
Please let me know. Thank you

Kimberly
Kimberly

Hi Rab, it’s been a long time since I got this card, but I seem to remember the points posting more or less right after the first purchase (maybe give or take a week). They will charge the annual fee at the beginning, and they definitely aren’t going to make you wait 12 months. Hope that helps!

How soon the miles are posting for this offer?

The Value Traveler

Hey this is just like those commercials for sponsoring kids in poor countries….You sponsor them and they send you a letter with a picture and how they are doing. I think its time these FA’s do the same for us using their codes. I want a picture, a handwritten letter, and a Xmas card, too.

Anyone know if the in-flight, paper app has the following language:

“This one-time AAdvantage® bonus mileage offer is valid for first-time cardmembers with new accounts only. Existing cardmembers, existing accounts, and previous cardmember with accounts closed in the past 24 months may not be eligible for this offer.”

DATA POINT:

I had the USairways card that auto-converted to red aviator. I applied for the 60k offer, declined after one day of pending. Called recon, CSR told me specifically its because I have a red aviator already open. I the nsaid I like to keep my expenses seperate for reimbursements, no dice. Seems like you cant get a 2nd red aviator even if you were transitioned from the usairways…I am going to clsoe today and wait a few months to apply again.

Brad Harris
Brad Harris

I had a USAir card that was converted to the red AA card. Did not want to pay the fee so requested the no fee card. This was two years ago. Applied for this 60,500 offer and after 5 days of pending was approved. Have 5 booked flights on AA; maybe having AA bookings helps.

Yet Another Redditor

Doc, here are some unique-ish/weird DPs for Barclaycard applications.

Applied for Arrival Plus before the 50K offer expired. Put in an older, expired promo code from a targeted mailer for good measure. This was on Sep 19, 1:15 AM ET and got a TransUnion HP (am in VA) and approval with 5K limit. Lousy limit, but Ok..

Later that evening, applied for the Aviator Red (missed putting in the flight attendant code and also clicked Yes for expedited shipping – double idiocy) hoping to double dip on the TU HP. Got pending status. Called recon, reviewed application and was approved with 10K limit. THEN, got a notice for an _Experian_ HP – which kind of defeated the purposed of the double-app.

Also, when I check the Barclaycard status page for the applications, the Sep 19, 1:15 AM Arrival+ application lists the correct date but the Aviator Red 10 PM application and recon lists the day after (Sep 20) for that application.

Experian (to which Barclays promptly reported new accounts even before I get the cards) has my account open dates as Sep 21 and Sep 22 respectively instead of Sep 19 and Sep 20.

Data point for those of you who signed up for the card, bought a pack of gum, cleared the bonus and then called to cancel. I received a 5,000 mile ($1,000 spend in 90 days) retention offer after having the card active for just over one month. I accepted the challenge. 810 credit score, LOL / 24.

Hi,

Got a quick question regarding when the offer will expire. The direct link provided indicates that the offer expires on 1/31/2018 but the title of this post says the offer will end on 11/30/2017. Do we know for sure when the offer will end with the direct link provided in this post as I want to get my Chase 5/24 in first before applying for this card but if the offer ends on 11/30/2017 then I will apply for it in the next couple of days.

Thanks,
ChihPin

Hi Doc, can you delete this comment? My sister got an email from AA saying that they are restricting her apps until her referral code is removed from the site. I will email you with more details.

Are there any examples of people NOT getting the bonus if they’ve already had this card and gotten the bonus before? This is my second time having this card. I previously got a 50K bonus less than a year ago and the 60K bonus has not posted to my AA acct yet. The application says it could be 4-6 weeks but I feel like I got the bonus much faster the first time and am still waiting for this second bonus. Thanks!

Just a DP for this card since I’m not sure where else to put it.

My AF is up on 12/31. I called Barcalaycard today to ask about retention offers, but they had none! Surprised that they offered nothing. I guess i’ll just end up canceling it, but was wondering if anyone else has had success with retention offers on it?

TravelPossible
TravelPossible

Quick Data Point:

I originally had the Barclays Aviator Card from August 2015 – February 2017. Closed it since I did not think the fee was worth it. Since my travel patterns for work changed, I applied again for the Aviator card on Jan. 6, 2018 with the 60k sign up bonus, and was approved after calling into the reconsideration line (866-408-4064) on the same day. Barclay Banker stated the minimum credit line needed for the card was $500, and that he could either use credit line from my current Barclay Arrival card, or assign me more credit since they were open to matching the credit line I had with Chase Bank. I opted for the additional credit line. Hope this information is helpful to anyone considering applying, but who has already had the Aviator card in the past.

If you ever cancel your Barclay Aviator card, the cancellation of the 10% rebate benefit is also immediate. 2 days after cancelling the card, i booked an award flight and only the citi rebate showed. It was split 50/50between Citi and Aviator back in 2017. Just to add a datapoint for anyone considering cancelling this card
