Giant/Stop&Shop/Martin’s: Get 5x Fuel Points on Amex Gift Cards [6/2-6/8]

The Offer

Giant S&S Martin’s (ad page 7)

  • Get 5x fuel points when buying Amex gift cards or Nike or Sears gift cards

The Fine Print

  • Valid 6/2 through 6/8
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying
  • They do accept credit card payment for purchases of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards

Gas Points Details

Here are the gas points details. Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1.
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

Amex gift cards are obviously harder to deal with than Visa or Mastercards, but at 5x this is a pretty good deal. For each $300 in Amex gift cards, you’ll get $1.50 off a fillup which can be worth up to $30 if you have a 20 gallon tank. Personally, I loaded up on fuel points with last week’s Visa gift card 2x offer so I’ll be giving this deal a miss.

The Nike and Sears deals aren’t bad either if you are able to maximize the fuel points – it’s essentially 10% off those gift cards with some legwork.

Remember also that you get a $10 grocery credit with $100 Mastercard gift card purchase with coupon. Buy $10 in groceries + $100 or $500 Mastercard + some Amex gift cards in one checkout to multitask.

  • DP at Martins: the 5X is actually only 0.5c/gallon on $100+ AGC purchase. Not 0.5*5 on $500 AGC.

  • Giant in PA gives you till the end of the current month, plus one more month after that.... I got 15k in Visa''s yesterday which will be good through the end of June, plus July. No limit in PA either up to 25 gallons. Gas is completely covered for the next 2 months. I also got a few 5 gallon jugs at Walmart to maximize the fuel rewards.... I do have to add one thing, one of the managers at Giant freaked out at me and refused to sell me the gift cards. Started flipping out about people getting rewards and gas. She said that several people were buying thousands of dollars in Visas on Thursday (June 1st, so points would last longer, glad people are catching on lol). Considering calling the district manager about the manager. She was nuts! East York Giant if anyone is near by.

    • What was she freaking out about. That was the ad and the offer. ?? I know it may not be the most convenient but there are 2 more Giants in west York that are pretty close together. You aren't that far from me. I'm just up 83 closer to Hbg.

      • Hey cool! Nice to know someone local is getting in on the deals! Lol. I believe one of the Giants in West York shut down. The one by the fairgrounds.... I work in West York so I hit the Carlisle Rd one pretty regularly. Most of the customer service people know me. But they limit it to 5k/day. Tried going twice in the same day with 5k purchases and they said they couldn't. I wanted to get 15k all on Thursday so that the points would last till the end of June, probably my own mistake for being overly ambitious and trying to do 10k at the east York one on the way home. Younger girl called her over since it was such a high volume transaction, and she just went off! "what are you even going to do work all those points!!?? This is the X-time today people buying thousands of gift cards, blah blah blah". I politely responded that what I would do is move of her concern, but they do advertise this and there was no kind of limit. So she started going off about how she's the manager for 16 years and she can refuse and do whatever she wants. Actually said that lol. I was on the phone with customer affairs for a while and then left. I did tell her that "she was drunk with power". That really stung! Yeah, just avoid that one if you need visas....

    • GiantFoodStores.com is this Giant chain.

I looked into the various Fuel Rewards programs for grocery stores in my area. There are plenty of Giant Food Store grocery stores, but all the gas stations are out of the way for my normal routes. Same situation for Weis, plenty of grocery stores and a lack of convenient gas stations. Both of these brands only use the points at the first-party branded station (no third-party tie-in like Shell).

The winner in the area for me is Acme since the points work at Sunoco (TONS of Sunoco all over here). Downside is $1.50 per gallon discount cap and no rewards earned on Visa/MC/Amex GC ever. It's decent for normal grocery spend though, typical $100 spend = $0.10 off.

      • I've also been doing the Acme gas rewards as the stations are very convenient, but decided to get a $500 Amex at Giant (in PA) that generated 2500 points. Does anyone know if I can do this deal again with the same Giant card, or I would have to use a different shopper's card/different household? I'd like to get one more $2.50/credit for the summer.

          • Thanks again. Just filled up an 18+ gallon tank for 79 cents via Giant, definitely worth the 20 minute drive. While there I got another $500 AGC, so I'm good for 1 more fillerup, yay.

      • Weis is partnered with Sheetz, so anywhere from PA to NC, you can redeem there; also partnered with Highs Gas stations in MD: https://www.weismarkets.com/highs-gas-locations-0

And one other gas station in NY State. The Weis website sux and omits some of this info with out digging ....

BUT $1.50/gal and 20 gal total discount limit!

        • Yeah, poor redemption availability though for Philadelphia suburb regions (like Bucks County, PA).

  • Too close to last week's deal, I've got over 10k pts that will easily get me through the month. Hoping to see another Visa offer sometime in early July.

  • Just recylced last week VGC into this. Now only if i had enough cars to rake up points and use them :(.

    • @NBG
      How do you do that?
I mean do you pay the fee separately or buy lower denomination card(s).
      TIA

      • Bought initial $1000 in VGC with CC. next trip bought another $1K in VGC and paid using the first $1K VGC and the the remainder (fees) using regular GC. Rinse and repeat. Unless you have 5X return on CC, no point in buying with CC and dealing with the hastle of unloading them. I am now doing it with the 5X gas points on Amex GC in Giant and paid using last week VGC.
So far 17K (valid for 2 months here) points with $1k initial investment. Convert that to $ - its 17x25 gallon=$425+ $20(2 percent CB on original $1k)-$54(9 cardsx$6 fees)=$391 (aka paid $691 for $1000)

  • Intriguing that Giant/S&S/Martin's stepping up their gc game.

footnote: Many of the Martin's markets have their own fuel stations. (and the Martin's fuel points work there. Last week, I got $2.00 off per gallon at one -- for 25 gallons)

    • escot-if you can go that high, you are probably in the same area as I am. Here you can earn enough to get your gas for free. No max discounts here. Right now I have $8.10 per gallon. They will just deduct the full price per gallon next time I fill up and so on, until I'm left with just a discount. I will probably get 3 full free fill ups and a partial discount on the 4th.

      • Many thanks Deb! I have been rather uncertain/confused about just how the Martin's gas discount program works....... The web site is anything but a model of clarity, and I'm picking up that the Martin's in Richmond and Williamsburg areas may be different too. (in part as I surmised they've tentatively been bought by another chain -- Pubx?)

For our Valley Martin's though, wow, that's grand to know there's no max discounts. AND..... unlike Giant (apparently), our bonus lasts longer than just 30 days. Found this on the web site:

"You'll receive 1 point for every dollar spent on eligible purchases. Gas points expire the last day of the month following the one in which they were received."

(So points earned say today, June 3rd, are good til July 31st.... rather Kroger like -- except the discount potential per gallon much, much higher) :-)

    • Yeah, Martins must have different limits. So their points are worth even more then.
