How come I got it but my friends didn't
I did this both times it was available and neither time worked for me at all. Granted I am from California but I did see some other people who were able to get it to work for them while still being in California so YMMV I suppose
Were the data points from other forums? I don't see any positives below about CA.

I used my Google Voice number and apparently you can't create a Venmo account with one. There goes that $20
