Update: Before the card got devalued the reader who sent this in was spending mid to high six figures a month on the card and high monthly spend seems to be in line with other readers who got the offer so I suspect that’s the real reason.
It’s not clear why American Express are sending out these bonus points or how they are deciding who is targeted. My only guess is that American Express is contractually obligated to purchase a certain amount of points in a specific period and they haven’t hit that naturally. We have seen spending bonuses offers on this card recently and it’s possible the Chase/American Express rules are having a bigger impact than first thought. Really that’s just me guessing, American Express might be targeting these cardholders for an entirely different reason.
