  • Valid 11/16-11/23

Our Verdict

Last week purchasing a $500 gift card triggered the discount three times for $30, unsure if that will be the case this week as well.

  • Things certainly changed since the last time I bought these at Hy-Vee. I had to fill out a form and sign it, they took a copy of my driver's license, grilled me on what I was using them for. Then to top it off, got a fraud alert on my card and had to get that cleared before the charge went through.

Apparently the form is required at 999.99 and above, which is dumb because they only allow $1000 max in a purchase anyway. So the next time this rolls around, I'll only buy 999.98 and see if I can avoid all that unpleasantness.

  • Charged the activation fee today at my KC location. Still a money maker and need to make spend.

    • Yeah the no activation key "bug" was fixed by them last year. 2023 was the last time I had success.

  • Was able to buy $450 Visa VGC less $30 + $6.95 fee with CC in KC area HyVee today. Even came with a free reusable bag.

    • Is the $450 Visa card a variable load or at a fixed $450? Does the payment have to be a debit card or can it be a credit card with me signing on the screen?

  • Anybody know if you can buy these at self checkout? It didn't work when I tried a couple of years ago, but they've updated their registers since then.

      • Turns out a regular cashier can do the overrides. I went to a normal lane late last night and the woman working said she didn't know where the supervisor was so let's just go to SCO. I scanned the card, she did an override. I put in the amount, she did an override. I paid, she did an override. It was crazy, but at least she could do it without a supervisor.

    • I'm surprised you still have self-checkouts. They got rid on all the ones near me to switch to quick checkouts.

  • Dang just bought 2k in mcgc from Walmart for my SYW offer. Guess ill do a couple citi cards instead

  • Purchased $500 visa e-gift card for $470 today, no activation fee even though the sticker said $6.95. Took me a while to figure out how to load it into my apple wallet, because you have to set up an account with the gift card website first, but then you can scan QR code and it's pretty easy.

      • scan QR code that you peeled off on the packet and it opens the my card wallet app then I clicked login with Apple and followed prompts to create account, it seemed to just do it automatically and the card showed up. From there I had a button to add to apple wallet

    • Usually purchasing with a high cashback credit card for grocery stores. Same reason a lot of people buy the Staples and Office Depot deals with Ink/Simply Cash card. Here they might even be able to get a $500 variable card if they sell them.

      • I guess it makes sense if you buy the $500 VGC and get $30 off since you’re only paying $6.95 and still coming out on top ~5% or more if you stack with 5% card as well.

        • The $10 coupon covers the fee, even a couple bucks more. If I had a Hy-Vee near me, I'd grab one with a 5% grocery card and buy Costco cards.

        • How can you get $30 off? The deal is for $10 off buying $150 or more. I buy these with 6% BCP card, the coupon more than covers the activation fee, and use them to pay medical bills, effectively transferring my 6% cashback to those bills.

          • Load $450 to the card and you get three $10 discounts applied for the one 6.95 fee.

  • What stores is this available in? Selected mine but I got the message "Ad could not be found for the selected store. Please select another store."

    • The same for me, go to the site, select your local store, select the ad for that week and scroll down and you will (usually) see a banner across the ad showing the deal.
