Our Verdict

The Ambassador program costs 40,000 points or $200 and comes with the following benefits at Intercontinental properties:

  • Guaranteed room upgrade
  • 4PM late check out
  • Up to $20 restaurant/bar credit, complimentary mineral water and internet service
  • Complimentary weekend night (valid on second night of a paid weekend stay)
  • IHG Platinum status

Personally I don’t think ambassador status is worth paying for, but if you have a planned weekend stay then signing up can make sense to make use of the complimentary weekend night depending on the room rate. This promotion makes it slightly better (basically costs 30,000 points instead of the standard 40,000 points). You might as well register for this promotion even if you have no Intercontinental stays planned just in case. This should also stack with IHG accelerate.

Does this count towards points stays? I don’t see any language in the terms that say paid stays only.

Do I get 3000 points if I’m staying at an InterContinental with an annual certificate?

My only IHG stay of the year is at an Intercontinental in Tokyo this October, so thanks for the heads up on this.

I hope it is not the Intercontinental Tokyo Bay. We live in Tokyo and have stayed at all of them here. That one is just ‘meh’ and too far away from everything. I did get really good use of Ambassador 3 years ago in Danang. That property is amazing.
