My American Express Retention Chat Offer

The $95 on my business American Express Green card just posted. I haven’t used the card much, and decided to just chat and cancel it. Interestingly, the rep transferred me over to a special retention chat team. It’s probably not new, but I don’t recall having retention done over chat before.

They offered me either a $75 statement credit with no requirements or 5,000 points after spending $3,000 within 3 months. I opted for the statement credit.

Another interesting thing is that they made me agree to a disclosure that I’ve agreed to keep the Green card with the statement credit posting within 8-12 weeks; also, if I engage in abuse, etc, or if I cancel or downgrade within 12 months, they reserve the right to revoke the statement credit.

That’s the same kind of language they say with regards to signup bonus offers, and they had that on my retention offer as well. Pretty sure this isn’t new either, but a couple of interesting tidbit so I thought worth sharing.

Overall I’m happy with how they mostly offset the annual fee.

    They're going all out on customer retention. Definitely worth chatting with them.

    • similar DP, called for retention/options. 2 year old MS plat card, fee just posted, no prior retention offered. offered 50K to keep account open 12 months. There is no downgrade option on MS card, that was new information.

    1. $100 statement credit with $1K spend
    2. 12500 MR with no spend requirement.
    3. Use 15k MR to offset the AF, receive 12500 MR back

    Green business card is most worthless card - BBP is far superior for free.

  • Opened the green card before they updated it.
    AF was waived for the first year. AF for the 2nd year is still $95 instead of $150 for the updated green card.

    I've put roughly $2000 spend on the card over the past year.

    Called in and asked to close the account, did not even ask for retention offer.
    Without transferring me to the "retention dept." the rep was able to offer 7500MR without spending requirements on the spot.

    Accepted the offer.
    Got the same disclosures like warning on abuse, not to close the account in 12 months, etc..

  • I gave them a call and also received both offers. I opted for the $75 statement credit. I will be closing my AMEX BIZ GOLD soon anyway so keeping this card for another year and paying $20 isn't a bad deal.

  • Thanks for the tip! Just tried on my Gold and was offered 20,000 points with no spend requirement.
