Our Verdict
Keep in mind the issues involved with moving to a new brand of cat/dog food (namely diarrhea). This requires having an existing bag of food, I guess even if you don’t want to switch you could grab the freebie and then donate it to a local shelter.

So I brought a can and was told I can only get 3 little cans since thats what I brought. Yet the coupon had both on it. So I chose a $20 4lb bag and 4 cans at 5$ total and the cashier redeemed the dry food for me! There was never any question about leaving my current food there.
terms say to "Bring in your dog or cat's food with artificial ingredients." just an fyi for those that skip that part of the post.
I brought in a can of Alpo dog food, exchanged it for 5 lb bag of the "good stuff." Employee said she could take my Alpo, or I could keep it. I did the latter.
FYI, I had to engage in a short "consultation," i.e., dog's age, weight, activity level. Pretty painless.
A single can is much easier to carry, got plenty of those thanks!
I just bought a 22lb bag of cat food that I can barely carry. Am I really supposed to bring that in? They don't mean trade it in? The best way to prevent issues switching foods is to slowly introduce by mixing a little with the current food and increasing.
"They don’t mean trade it in?"
Yes, that's what they mean. And yes, new food should be introduced with gradual mixing so it's not a good idea to bring in your only bag of the old food, especially one so large (they're only giving out a 4lb bag in exchange). Pick up a tiny can of cheapo cat food at Dollar General or similar, and bring that to trade in instead.
I feed 11 cats dry and wet food so have plenty of cans just didn't realize that works too.
This is perfect for my shelter donation. Thanks DoC!
This makes me wonder if all of us DOC followers did this and donated to the local pet shelter......we could make a difference.
especially if all of the animals end up with diarrhea!
b... we wouldn't want that to happen. The fix... go to a shelter and take home a pet. You can feed your new family member any brand you desire and cure the diarrhea!! Don't forget a visit to the vet... all family members deserve quality health care... even the furry ones. John 3:16
