"They use fake credit cards and convince the cashier to run the fake card as cash. The scammers then use the money obtained from the fake cards to buy gift cards, and then continue the cycle, which makes the scam “untraceable.”"
That's what the Target article says. Does anyone understand exactly what these people did?
They told the cashier to press the "cash" button when inserting their stolen card. This makes the register think the scammer paid in cash and approve the transaction
They check out using a cc that fails and then convince the clerk to hit the K1 (or similar) button to override and tell the system cash was received instead. The system thinks it got payment so the gift cards get activated. A noob clerk won't realize they are doing an override and should be getting cash, not just pushing buttons.
Most articles like this never lay out all the details of the scam .... mostly to prevent copy-cats from but also because writers don't understand the subject matter fully
True, but we should be able to figure it out, yet I cannot just from the info given.
Same (too lazy to dig for 'K1 scam') .
Was hoping someone here would explain it further.
Also seems like a weird claim in the article, that a random traffic stop where the driver had 100 giftcards in his possesion got the whole thing exposed.
Hopefully I never get pulled over... ;)

Looks like jetBlue is going to buy a big customer service problem:

Panera just announced their beverage club will include more beverages beginning 4/19. Price will increase $2/month starting in 2023 (at least for current members - maybe it will increase for new sign-ups immediately). My guess is these new caffeinated lemonades and other freshly made beverages (iced tea, regular lemonade) will be added.
LOL, since it was self serve, I thought everyone was anyways getting whatever beverage they liked.
