Our Verdict

You’ll want to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on drugstore purchases, keep in mind the Chase Freedom is currently earning 5x points on these purchases. Some stores are cash only for gift card purchases, but varies by store. Keep in mind Plenti points are easier to cash out for a lot of people now.

  • Used to shop at RA for many things, but when they went to the no cc for variable laid cards my family took all our pharmacy business elsewhere. I do miss using Apple Pay at the drugstore, which was one advantage RA had over other chains.

  • I'm a regular Rite-Aid shopper and the first thing I do when I get my Thursday paper is check out the following week's Rite-Aid ad for these gift card deals, which seem to proliferate around holidays such as Mother's Day, Valentine' Day, graduation season, and, of course, Christmas. I have literally earned hundreds of dollars worth of Plenti points taking advantage of these bonuses and using the cards in stores I shop in anyway such as Macy's, Bed Bath and Beyond and Kohls.

  • one correction.. 500 plenti points for 50$ itunes GCs.. 1000 plenti is for gap branded GCs..

  • Where'd the info on this deal come from? Trying to find details about it at riteaid.com so I can be prepared when I go to a store. Thanks!

  • damn. no best buy or google play this time. that sux. also like the OP said, cashiers always make them own random rules. just move on. nothing is hard coded. even had one cashier say they only take CC for GC. No Samsung Pay NFC or MST. Only Apply Pay NFC. WTF are you talking about. idiot.

    • Last time I tried to buy a GC (netspend visa) and tried to pay with chase freedom, it apparently displayed something on the cashier's screen and he told me that they only accept debit/cash. Not sure if this only showed a warning that he could have ignored or if the tx got actually automatically declined.

This was end of march in SoCal.

      • Story I got was cash/debit only for visa/mc etc <-that was hard coded. But could use cc for third party gc, so I did.

        • Yeah, that might be it. He made a general statement, but I didn't try any other store gc - they where not interesting to me.

        • The official policy is CASH ONLY for Variable Load cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, pre-paid (like Netspend, etc.).

Credit cards can be used to by any fixed denomination card (including Visa, MC, etc.). I bought the $100 Visa GC (Vanilla) with my Chase Freedom (5% back). The purchase fee on it was $5.95. There is an offer through 4/29 on them. Earn 500 Plenti points when you buy $50 Vanilla Visa GC. Limit 2 Offers. Like all Rite-Aid Plenti GC offers, you can purchase a single $100 Visa GC and you earn 1000 Plenti points. I did this and can personally verify.

At first cashier said she thinks the Visa GC was cash only and I simply stated that no that's only the variable load ones. They actually had a very clear sign stating this on top of the GC rack (with pictures of cards and everything).
