Senior Park Pass Will Officially Increase To $80 (From $10) On August 28th

At the moment it’s currently possible to purchase a lifetime Senior Park Pass or $10, there has been rumors about a possible price increase for some time (we first covered this back in April). They have now officially announced the following changes:

  • On August 28th the price will be increasing to $80 (from $10) for the lifetime park pass
  • They will also be introducing an annual pass for $20

Due to these changes demand seems to be at an all time high so they recommend purchasing the pass directly if you need it before the changes take place (this also gets you out of the $10 handling fee per pass as well), otherwise order online and expect a wait of up to nine weeks. As long as your order is postmarked by August 27th you will pay the $10 rate. This pass is for permanent residents and citizens that are over the age of 62. Provides entrance or access to pass owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at Federal operated recreation sites across the country.

They are raising it because this is another example of the government running out of money. More and more seniors are breaking the system.

Well, with all the drilling, pollution, and violence. >_< Not exactly Roosevelt's America.

I am not yet a senior. Can I buy now a lifetime senior pass that I can use once I become a senior?

DL/passport is required to check eligibility, ask yourself if you’ll pass scrutiny.

So you have to order them one at a time. It’s $10 for the pass, plus $5 handling fee.. So really $15 each person. Still better than $80 plus shipping, I gather. You also need to send them a copy of your driver’s license or passport. Comes with hang tag.

You have all the facts wrong. The handling fee is $10, not $5. And there is no handling fee if you buy the pass in person at any national park, national monument, forest service office, etc.

Good, it should. Why should younger people have to pay full price and not seniors..

Usually a senior is expected to have a shorter lifespan than non-enforceable, but with your attitude, I’d gladly take the odds on that not being the case.

*non-enforceable=non-seniors, lol

Seniors are still not going to pay full price. The pass is about $80 per year if you’re not a senior. This is $80 for life for seniors.

Jesus, so they were paying $10/lifetime when I was paying $80/year? Yes, that is still a great deal.

Because seniors are typically on a fixed retirement income (if that)…

I’ve been advocating for this change for years. I’m sympathetic of seniors on fixed incomes, but in my experience seniors visiting National Parks are solidly middle-class or above, often driving expensive RVs. (Granted, I don’t have data to support these claims.) Regardless, $10 for a lifetime pass is far too good of a deal and totally out of line from what everyone else pays. Not only that, $10 is so little it probably should have been free so they didn’t have to hassle with cards and paperwork. In short, I’m glad the price is going up.

4th graders still get a free annual NP pass though!
