[Expired] Staples: Purchase $300 in AMEX Gift Cards & Get $20 Staples Gift Card [6/11-6/17]

The Offer

Direct Link (ad page 3)

  • Get a $20 Staples gift card via Staples Easy Rebates when you buy $300 in Amex gift cards at a Staples store

The Fine Print

  • Valid Sunday 6/11 through Saturday 6/17 (starts this coming Sunday)
  • In-store only
  • Limit one rebate per household
  • Not valid in VT

Our Verdict

Obviously not the greatest deal since Amex gift cards aren’t easy to liquidate and the rebate is in form of a Staples gift card which isn’t as valuable as a Visa prepaid card.

Still could be interesting for someone with a credit card that earns bonus points for office supply stores. Even more interesting if you use an Amex card that got targeted for the spend $100 and get $20 back deal. That deal ends on the 15th so do it at the beginning of the week.

I had 2 of my 3 rebates denied saying that I can only have 1 per household. I used different names and addresses so the only thing i can think of is that i used the same CC for all 3. i guess they are tracking that now. Shame cause i usually use this when i have a single card i am trying to reach a spend sign-up bonus.

Is it possible to use a Staples GC to pay just the activation fee? For example, if 2 AMEX cards are $413.90, shouldn’t it be possible to pay $13.90 with Staples GC? This is possible at other stores.

well, theoretically it is possible to pay for the whole transaction with a Staples gift card… the register will take it.
it’s all up to the cashier what they allow… they are trained to reject Staples gift card for any transaction that includes purchase of any kid of GC… but some don’t care… YMMV.

What is the purchase or activation fee on these AmEx gift cards? Isn’t it like $6 or $7 fee per card?

Which denominations of AMEX GC does Staples sell? Is $200 the highest (meaning we need to purchase 2 of them with 2 fees to get the rebate, similar to Visa GCs) or do they sell a variable that I can load with $300 and pay only one fee?

I’ve seen $25, $50, $100 ($5.95 fee), or $200 ($6.95 fee), but nothing larger than $200.

Same here. These are the worst out of the 3 gift card deals at staples.

MC gc are much worse since they are very prone to being hacked.

One or two days? I liquidate one or two hours after purchase.

You’re playing with fire. I’ve had a MCGC get hacked less than 24 hours after purchase.

I usually liquidate ~20 minutes after purchase. I go straight to WM after to buy any gift cards.

Where does it say that the $20 rebate will be in the form of staples gift card? All it says is $20 off via easy rebate, they haven’t mentioned what form of rebate it will be.

Usually if the item is a MCGC or AGC then the rebate is a staples gift card. I think it has something to do with the Visa relationship. No idea why, but this has been the case for years.

well, if you were Amex or MC, would you want the reward for buying your product to be a Visa card?
😉

It would make more sense if they gave a $20 Amex gc like Visa does for their promos.

This would be better if you could use those Staples’ gift cards to buy gift cards.

You can use the $20 as first split in payment for a Visa gift card. I bought something else cheap to go with it.

Are you saying that you bought for example a $1 candy and a $200 Visa gc and they let you apply a $20 Staples gc toward the purchase?

lol what you used was just a Visa card, Eric thought you meant you used s Staples Gift card. This Amex offer gives you a store gift card.

I was able to pay with a $20 Staples GC when I bought an item on clearance for 25 cents plus a $200 VGC. I swiped the store GC first and it won’t work so cashier asked for the GC and $20 was taken off and I paid the balance with INK+. When it didn’t work on my end, I was prepared to get rejected but cashier proceeded to swipe on her end and it worked!

You can use Staples store-only $20 GC (Not the Visa rebate card) to buy other GCs (Lowe’s, Amazon, etc) if you do it only occasionally, and have a relationship with your cashiers and managers at Staples. The POS is not hard-coded to block the Staples GC from buying another.

That is most likely only if you buy Amex gift cards directly from Amex, not at Staples.

That is a gold mine one when you combine it with sear’s portal when they have their 25% in points offer (1 week per month usually). You can get $50 in sears points for free

I’ve done that a few times. The last time I only received the base 2% though instead of the 25%.
