[Expired] [Targeted] Citicards: Get 10% Back on Paypal Purchases, up to $40; or $25 Back on $75 Purchase (6/24-8/23)

The Offer

Citi is sending out the following targeted offers on some cards (email subject: <your name>, earn up to $40 back when you shop with Citi and PayPal after qualifying purchases):

  • Earn 10% back as a statement credit, up to $40, on eligible PayPal purchases with your Citi card between 06/24/2019 and 08/23/2019.
  • Earn $25 back as a statement credit when you spend $75 on eligible PayPal purchases with your Citi card between 06/24/2019 and 08/23/2019.

Others are seeing other kinds of variations, like 5% instead of 10%.

The Fine Print

  • Earnings associated with this program will equal 10% back on eligible PayPal purchases that will be posted as a credit on your account and may overlap with other special offers in which you are currently enrolled.
  • Total earnings associated with this offer are subject to a maximum of $40.
  • Your purchases must post to your account between 06/24/2019 and 08/23/2019. Delays by the merchant, such as shipping, could extend the date that your purchases post beyond the promotional period.
  • An eligible purchase is a purchase made when PayPal is the payment method, except for peer-to-peer transactions (such as PayPal Send Money transactions), Citi credit card purchases made with convenience checks, cash advances, and items returned for credit.
  • The statement credit will be applied to your account within 2 billing cycles after the eligible purchases are posted.
  • To qualify for this offer, your account must be open and current when the statement credit is applied. If you convert to another Citi product, you may no longer be eligible for this offer.
  • Offer is non-transferable and only available for the account noted in this email.

Our Verdict

I just got the 10% offer on my AT&T card and readers report on the $25 version, the later being a much better offer, obviously. Presumably these are being sent out as targeted offers on various cards. During Q3 2019, Discover is offering 5% back on Paypal purchases as well.

Did anyone receive the $25 statement credit yet?

I never received my credit even though I completed the $75 Paypal purchases (2 separate purchases totaling $79) in July. The credit was supposed to post within 2 billing cycles. I called in today and the representative said I had not met the requirement. I politely referred her to my July billing statement. She reviewed it and said she agreed that I did meet the requirement. She submitted a dispute and asked me to check back in 10 business days.

Following up, after my call where the customer service rep. confirmed that I met the requirements for the $25 credit, I received a U.S. mail letter a week later stating I was ineligible for the credit. I called again and politely asked why I received the letter. After nearly 30 minutes on hold, the rep. said I would receive a $75 credit for my trouble (I had only politely asked for the $25 I was owed). Within 2 days I received a $75 courtesy credit. I have no idea why this was so difficult or why they gave me $75 instead of the $25 I was promised, but I’ll take it.

So this is weird. I tried to link my ATTA to my PayPal, and the online link says it can not be done. But I did press the button.
I check my PayPal account, and its not only not linked, I can’t add the ATTA. It says ‘card denied’. WTF.

My ATTA statement cuts yesterday, and I look at the statement….and Citi has retroactively given me the 10% credit for PayPal purchases on the ATTA ! And my card – checking again – is still not linked to PayPal (nor even able to!)

Crazy. I guess I’ll use it for the next month or so.

Citi I/T continues to amaze

Is there some account setting that I need to opt into to receive these types of targeted offers from Citi? I’ve had an account with them for many years and never receive any of these.

Same here. I’ve had an account for a couple of years and never received any of these emails. Can offers such as this be checked on Citi’s site?

What’s the best way to make 3x $25 transactions? Are there gift cards to buy or something?

Do smaller amounts that add up to more than $75 qualify?

The offer term says “purchase(s)” so I think so.

Terms and Conditions

You will receive a one‐time $25 statement credit after you make eligible purchase(s) of $75 or more each using PayPal with your linked Citi credit card.

Actually it says $75 or more EACH which I find quite confusing. Based on this language I’m not sure if multiple small purchases would trigger the credit.

I read that as “each” modifying “using PayPal …”, meaning multiple purchases adding up to $75+ must EACH use PayPal and your linked Citi card to count.
