The Amex Offers Multi-Tab Trick is Dead, There’s Now a Hard Limit of One Offer per Person

Well, it finally happened, stick a fork in it: the Amex Offer multi-tab trick died today, August 1, 2018.

Amex Offer Death

Until a month ago, it was possible to save the same Amex Offer on multiple cards in two ways:

  1. Cards in separate logins were all fair game, so if you made a separate login for each card, you could save the offer on every single card separately.
  2. Cards in the same login, the trick was to open a separate tab for each card, then proceed to save the offer on each one. This was known as the multi-tab trick.

The first approach died a few weeks ago when Amex created a block whereby once an offer is saved on a card, it gets removed from showing on cards in other logins with the same name/SSN (we don’t know the exact criteria, but something to do with name/SSN/address).

This did not hinder the saving of offers on multiple cards within the same login using the multi-tab trick: even cards with the same name/SSN could be saved using this trick.

Today, Amex apparently updated something whereby only the first cards gets saved when using the multi-tab trick. While the system will appear to save the other tabs, in practice those offers will not be saved on the account, as evident from refreshing the page and looking at your saved offers.

Presumably the multi-tab death is all based on the earlier demise which limits us to one offer per name/SSN thus blocking us from saving the same offer on two cards with the same name/SSN. If you have two cards in the same login with different names (if that’s possible), it should still be possible to do the multi-tab trick and save the offer on both of those cards.

Existing offers which were added remain on your card and won’t be removed. Some of the older offers can continue to be added using the multi-tab trick. The issue here is for adding newly-released offers and all future offers.

End of an era: you can now only have one Amex Offer saved per name/SSN. It was s a nice run. I imagine some people will be closing out some Amex cards with annual fees which are no longer worth their keep.

Updates

A few updates:

  • It looks like you can add one statement credit offer and one membership rewards point offer (e.g these are treated as separate offers).
  • In a seemingly unrelated development, they system is sometimes showing the MR offer and the cash back offer on the same card, so it should be possible, for example, to get $100 and 10,000 MR points with a single $500 purchase at Peninsula Hotels if you find both of those offers on a card. Image below.
  • Some readers mention the idea of saving an offer on your phone and computer simultaneously and that might help them both get saved. YMMV
  • On 8/3/18 they killed off the old Amex interface link which some people used to use for various reasons – it now simply directs to the standard login. Update 08/05/18: Old interface link is working again. Update 08/19/18: Stopped working again.
  • A Frequentmiler reader points out that if you add an offer to an AU card, that person will then lose their own Amex Offer deal on their own primary card (as well as on any other AU cards).
  • Amex has also now added an eligibility checker within the Amex Offers interface to show whether you have any uses left for the offer.
  • 8/27/18: For the new Marriott Amex Offer deal the multi-tab trick is working; it’s possible there’ll be others in the future that work as well. 10/10/18: The Lyft offer works too.

I think its interesting that Amex’s Reward Abuse Team (RAT) reads Reddit discussions in order to find and close options like this one. Most recently, users on Reddit discussing self-referral of Amex cards (to get a bonus) prompted a comment from “AMEX official” (the RAT) that read “thanks for making our job easier” (referring to how they started claw backs of said self-referral points). I think it’s ironic because I’ve only referred one person to Amex in the past, and I didn’t get the referral bonus. I fought tooth and nail, with no avail, and I even closed my card with them because of the way they handled it. A year after closing my only card with them, they mail me a check and a letter saying sorry, due to a system error you didn’t get your referral bonus due to you. It was ironic, because they had insisted at the time that any system error was not possible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi Guys!!

Thank you for all the hard work.

Does it make sense still keeping different logins for each amex card?

and also ,what about the authorized user cards, better to cancel them?
Pls help

Yes, I was thinking about consolidating back to single logins per person as well. AU’s definitely worth keeping, as Chuck pointed out.

Interesting report:

I was not aware of this before aiming at the recent Lyft and Roti offers. So I was doing the multi-tab trick as usual for both.

I found Lyft offer on more of my cards, so I did the trick on it first, and SUCCEEDED!! All cards with the Lyft offer got it added. Fine.

With the Roti offer, I started from Schwab, added it and went on to the others. But this time, NO LUCK. And that was when I actually searched and found this old post. I wonder what would happen if I had not started adding the Roti offer with the Schwab card.

So I ended up with only one Roti offer and several Lyft ones. Ironically, I actually needed the Roti as I actually eat there fairly often. Now I don’t really know what to do with that many Lyft offers.

If you look at the terms, Roti is per card member while Lyft is per online account. Technically that should mean that neither should have worked with the multi tab trick but the per card member seems to be the one that they are movie toward. That could explain why it worked for one and not the other.

Old Interface working today. Was able to add today’s offers (South Beach, Dell X2 and Nutrisystem) to two cards (same SSN/name) on separate logins by clicking together the offers on both mobile app and web page at the same time (actually web page a tad sooner as mobile app is faster)
Logged out and back in on both systems to check if on one of the cards it was removed, so far, still there. This is getting confusing but its all about finding that glitch!

Holy crap! Looks like Amex has taken it a step further. Four of the five HelloFresh offers added to the different AUs’ accounts have disappeared. All five offers were added after Amex made the changes to limit it to one offer per “person”. Now it looks like it’s truly one offer per primary card, like the T&Cs have long implied, regardless of how many “persons”/AUs are under that one primary card/account holder. Actually, check that, it’s even more restricive than that. It’s now one offer per primary card holder (though the offer may remain only on one of the AU’s account), because I only got it on the BCE, but nothing on the BCP.

Data point: Not too comforting to many people due to Server/Bluebird shutdowns but that seem to not affected by this. I can add Mcafee Amex offer on Credit card login and then after log out went back to Serve account and was able to add offer in it as well.

It’s back from the dead, but I suspect this will be short-lived. I just added the same offer to two cards with the same name and online account. I used two different devices and clicked/tapped as close to simultaneously as I could. Logged out and in again and both offers are still there. Also the old interface is back up. My suspicion is that they ran into some problem so they reverted to the previous version of the software. Once they’ve solved the problem, it’ll be dead forever. Too bad there are no offers that interest me.

i have a question, I was shut down by Amex and I still hold one old Amex AA from citi bank. I used to be able to get Amex offers on it through Facebook or even the citi website but I cannot do it now. Anyone knows if there’s an alternative way to access Amex offers other than amex website?
