TransUnion Reporting Old American Express Backdated Accounts Again

At the end of February we wrote a post on TransUnion No Longer Backdating Old American Express Cards. For those that do have backdated accounts, good news! It seems like this was a temporary error and accounts that were previously backdated are now showing those backdated dates again (data points: here, here, here).

For those that have no idea what I’m talking about, American Express used to backdate new cards (e.g when you opened a new card they would reported your member since date, rather than when the new credit card was actually opened). This practice ended on March 21st, 2015 for new cards, cards that were already opened and reporting the old date were not affected. Earlier it appeared that TransUnion were showing the real open dates rather than the backdated accounts, but this appears to only be a temporary glitch.

  • This explains why my Credit Karma score went down a few weeks ago, and just went back up 20 points today.

  • I signed up for new Amex accounts after being gone for seven years and I've had to go through and ask them to the accounts.

  • is this only on transunion? so wouldn't effect 5/24 since that's typically experian?

    • Yes this is only on TU and didn't affect 5/24 anyway due to the dates involved.

    • Chase is always Transunion for me (KY), but I am in a minority concerning that. So yes, no change on 5/24 for most people.

  • Maybe that's why my fico score went down without any activity.
