[Reversed] Capital One: 25% Transfer Bonus To Emirates (1:1.25)

Update 4/30/25: This is no longer working. In addition those who received the 25% bonus have had the additional points debited from their accounts. Probably worst case outcome given that they aren’t just giving back the Capital One points.

Our Verdict

Transfers are instant so you can do small transfers to make sure this works. Not sure if it’s intentional or not and if transfers will be reversed/revised to the normal 1:1 rate. Not sure what is going on with Emirates currently:

  • Any data points from someone who actually made a booking with the bonus miles? Did they cancel the booking so they could claw back the miles?

    • I transferred 119K Capital One miles to Emirates on Thursday (04/29). Received a total 148.75K Skywards miles. Used them to book a round-trip flight from JFK to DXB in First. (I topped off my account with Amex & Chase miles to make this booking.)

      As of right now, my tickets are still confirmed. However, they did claw back the miles, so I currently have a negative number of miles showing in my Skywards account.

  • I’m sorry DoC. You have a greater duty of care here than you’re letting on. If you posted it and exposed your readers and IF AND ONLY IF you have contacts at Cap1, you’re duty bound to make that contact to help make right by your readers. It’s Rule 14 of the blogger handbook code of conduct. Check the book it’s right there.

    • We did mention the risks, others can decide if that risk is worth it or not.

    • DoC literally put the caveat out there by saying "Not sure if it’s intentional or not and if transfers will be reversed/revised to the normal 1:1 rate." And if you've been in this game long enough, you know there's always an element of risk. Instead of blaming others, take some responsibility.

      • What if it actually is here? Like, sometimes, it is someone else's' fault. C'mon.

        • There was a screenshot that reflected a transfer bonus. They reported on that. End of story. And, it's not Dan's Deals fault.

          If they didn't report on it, there would be someone who gripes that they didn't report on it. They've been cheated.

          We know the risks of the game. Everyone needs to put on their big boy pants. Remember the AA Simply Miles 240X deal a few years ago? There were those who took it and those who didn't. Those who didn't said it was a scam. Then, after the deal closed and points were posting, those who didn't whined that they were cheated.

          Then, there's the (reader) below who goes to CHASE . . . and reports back that there was no transfer bonus at CHASE. What the (heck)?

          The DoC team does a tremendous service to the hobby and it is in bad form to criticize them on this.

  • In the past, one might have lodged a complaint with the CFPB. But, in the current environment, hobbyists can expect no relief from rogue companies. Pure and simple.

    • Why would you ask CFPB, even in former times? Cap1 didn’t promise anything beyond a 1:1 transfer. CFPB has no jurisdiction over Emirates.

      • On behalf of a consumer several months ago, the CFPB contacted Emirates regarding a points dispute. Without objection, Emirates credited points back to the consumer. I'm relating something that worked. If it can help someone, I thought that I would share. If someone has a problem with members of this community helping each other, I'm not sure what to say.

      • The CFPB was ordered to cease operations in February. It's functionally shuttered.

    • I'm with you, 100%. Now, where are those guys who kept saying 'something-something contact your state attorneys general...' to save us now. Oh, yeah, doesn't work very well. CFPB was the key. And we gave it all up so a con-man could stay out of jail. Yikes.

  • Great strategy for Emirates to sell lots of miles to Capital One:

    Offer 25% transfer bonus “error”, wait for word to spread on the travel blogs, sell a few million miles to Capital One, and then fix the “error” and reverse the 25% bonus. There is no recourse if you transferred miles since it showed 1:1 on Capital One side. Brilliant!

    • Definitely pissed, but I guess part of the game. I wonder how plausible it’d be to complain to Cap1 since they initially deposited the 1.25 value.

      • You can try complaining to Capital One, but I’m not sure how understanding they will be considering the error was not on their side.

        • With regulators now turning a blind eye, they will act in their own financial interest. Period. No one is watching out for the consumer.

          • You should be watching out for yourself. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. I think I heard that somewhere, and it wasn't from the government.

            There can be risks in this "hobby."

          • I always wondered what would happen if one's diet consisted entirely of boots.....

  • Transferred 2k miles as of this morning 11:45am ET and have not received the 25% bonus. Might be dead.

  • No longer working with Chase. Tried to transfer 43,000 miles and no 25% bonus showed up. However it did work with Capital one last night when I transferred miles.

  • Something's up with Emirates.. whatever they're doing with Amex/Chase is odd, and with Citi is disappointing. Yet, they do this with Capital One? Wild.

    • I think somebody just failed their algebra class but got put in charge of coding—1:1.25 is 4:5 instead of 5:4…
