UPS Data Breach Affects Over 100,000

In recent news, 51 UPS Stores across 24 states were affected by a data breach between January 2014 and August 2014. UPS is quick to point out that this is just 1% of all UPS Stores. Approximately 105,000 customer transactions were effected, much less than the 70 million Target customers effected last year, but still a significant number. You can see a full list of effected stores here. As of August 11, 2014 all UPS Stores are secure.

The following information has been compromised:

  • debit and credit card info
  • names and addresses
  • email addresses

There have not yet been any reports of fraud due to the breach.

UPS is offering one year of free credit monitering services and identity protection to any customer who used a debit or credit card in an effected store. You need to submit the request for the services here.

The UPS respose is similar to Target’s response by offering identity protection and credit monitering services, and better than Ebay’s response who did not offer anything due to the fact that there was no evidence of financial information being compromised.
