[Checks Coming] Wells Fargo $142 Million Class Action Settlement For Unauthorized Account Openings & Identity Theft Protection Services

Update 11/9/20: Checks coming in the mail this past week. Keep an eye out.

Reposting because it’s now possible to file your claim online.

Wells Fargo Class Action Settlement

Direct link

  • Wells Fargo Credit Cards, lines of credit, checking or savings accounts opened or applied for in their name without their permission, or had authorized identity theft protection services from Wells Fargo, from May 1, 2002 to April 20, 2017

How Much Will You Receive?

  • At this stage that is unclear and will likely depend on your unique circumstances and also how many other claimants there are. The official website states that cash benefit may apply to the following:
    • A payment to compensate you for fees you may have paid in connection
    • Cash to compensate you for damages caused by harm to your credit.
    • Plus, any money remaining in the fund, after paying the benefits above and all

Important Dates

  • July 8th: Preliminary Approval Order Granted
  • Early Oct: Mailed Notice to Class Members & Online Claims Begin
  • December 5th: Deadline to Object or Ask to be Excluded from the Settlement
  • January 4th, 2018: Final Fairness Hearing
  • February 3rd, 2018: Deadline to File Claim

Final Thoughts

It’ll be interesting to see how much people actually receive if they were a victim of this unauthorized account opening, the main issue I have with class actions is that those affected generally don’t receive an amount that matches what they theoretically should receive. Either way if you’re eligible you should either participate or opt out if you want to seek your own legal action.

I just got a check for $11 that is supposedly to reimburse me for fees I was charged on an account, plus $4 “to compensate me for the time you did not have those funds”.

Funny thing is, they listed the last 4 digits of the account number and I don’t see it in Quicken, and I generally add all of my accounts there.

Yesterday, received a nice settlement. -$70. A nice chunk of change for a Class Action. I didn’t think they had my current address, but it is on all my Credit Reports. I didn’t track how my account and data were abused.

Question ?

I opened the Wells Fargo Credit Card Aug./2020 for $150 bonus.
They did a Hard Pull with Experian the same day.

My Experian credit report shows a hard pull for Wells Fargo that day. AND a ‘Soft Pull’ on the same day, with the same address as Wells Faro, but it is listed as “Dillards”. So I am assuming that “Dillards” is a card issued by Wells Fargo since it has the same address as WF. I didn’t apply for a “Dillards” card, I applied for the WF card with the $150 bonus.

Does this sound like fruad to anybody?

So you’re saying WF opened a Dillards card for you without your permission

Got $60. They opened a savings account without my permission. Same thing happened at Chase, where’s their lawsuit?

$142 Million isn’t punishing enough for Wells Fargo.

I received a check from Wells Fargo a few weeks ago with not much info other than Settlement. Assuming it was for this. It was for around $1200. My mom got one for a similar amount. She called and they confirmed it was for the class action.

I have business and personal accounts with WF.
