[YMMV] Navy Federal Credit Union 30,000 Point Bonus & $100 Statement Credit On Flagship Rewards Card

Seems there is now a direct link to see if you’re pre-approved and it’s also valid until October 16th instead of September 30th. Hat tip to reader Custom Answers.

The Offer

Direct link

  • Get an extra 30,000 points after $3,000 in spend within the first 90 days of account opening on the Navy Federal Flagship Rewards card. Also comes with a $100 statement credit on travel related purchases in your first year.

Card Details

  • No annual fee first year, then $49 per year
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Card earns 2x points per $1 spent
  • Double points at Wholesale Clubs (4x points)
  • Travel credit:  A Qualifying Purchase is a purchase made by a primary cardholder with a Navy Federal Visa Signature Flagship Rewards Card that has a merchant’s code that is categorized as a travel merchant code for airlines, hotels/motels, timeshares, campgrounds, car rentals, cruises, travel agencies, discount travel sites, buses, trains, taxi/limos, ferries, tolls, bridges, highways, parking lots or garages. Purchases using credit cards issued to authorized users or joint cardholders will not be eligible.

Eligibility

  • Eligibility to NFCU is for military members, associated persons and their family. See more here.

Our Verdict

Previous bonuses have been 40,000 points without the $100 travel statement credit. Basically the same offer as points are worth 1¢ when redeeming in increments of 10,000 or more towards travel. If you want to know more about NFCU credit cards I’d recommend reading this post.

I got the card during the promo last fall, spent the spend, got the points, and now got the travel credit. Twice, a statement credit was issued the day after a hotel charge posted.

I haven’t used the points yet, but the travel portal feels more like the citi or flexperks OTA, and less like Chase’s travel portal OTA.

I’ll come back later after I use the points, but so far 10/10, would churn again.

Guy, how long after meeting the minimum spending requirement did your bonus post to your account? Did you do any bank account funding with the card? Did it count toward the minimum spending requirement?

Thank you for your help!

My $100 travel credit auto-posted today for hotel & rental car purchases in early Oct. Still waiting on my 30,000 points to post after a few more statement cycles.

For future DP’s, I was not “targeted” (via email or online banking) for this offer, but called and gave rep the Acceptance Code and she attached it to my application and said I was eligible. She was a little confused on how I knew of the offer if it didn’t come via email 🙂

Thanks DoC!

My personal opinion is its credit card reward points are not as good as it seems. While 2x per $1 spent and/or 4x on Costco sound great, it is only worth 1/2 cent per point when redeem to store giftcards; when cash in to pay spending, it has to be up to 3 transactions and over $50, and each point is only worth 0.75 cent. Only redeem for travel is worth getting this card.

Approved!!! for an additional 3x credit than I already had from my 2 nfcu cards. I chatted with the rep, and they said if you saw the offer code, 24567 (said that offer code was valid), and a link to apply right from the offer page, then you should be good to go. I saw the offer, saw the code, saw the link, applied, and was insta-proved. offer code was on confirmation page and all application pages.

17/24 at time of approval, denied for citi premier 7/25/17 and denied for merrill+ a few days ago. 30+ year banking relationship with nfcu, 2 other cash rewards cards 8 and 5 years old.

Ugh, you can see the offer code and a link to apply while not logged in.

In fact, when I login and try going to the “pre-approval” link, it still shows I’m not logged in. It’s not a pre-approval link.

Nowm if people are seeing this under their “my offers” it may be a pre-approval but as I haven’t had anything there show for awhile now, I wouldn’t know.

I have no doubt I would be approved for this but the link referenced in the original post is certainly NOT a pre-approval.

LOL, I know full well what a pre-approval is. All I was saying was that the link is NOT a pre-approval.

The information about a pre-approval link is not accurate.

How do you know if you’re pre approved??

Wait, please verify.

The $3K must be spent on travel related spend to qualify for the $400 value, is that right?

Navy Fed is one of regular banking “friends”, as is Chase. Always looking for our “friends” to reward us with better offers than pushing open doors to new friends (US Bank, etc.). But, if I have $2600 in travel to keep on the books for a year before I actually use (example: WN), this is merely another NavFed disappointment.

If I am missing something, please advise. TIA.

I think we need to see the text for the footnotes that appear in the offer.

So now they are forcing you to travel to get the full $400… I’m targeted.

Details on travel credit: A Qualifying Purchase is a purchase made by a primary cardholder with a Navy Federal Visa Signature Flagship Rewards Card that has a merchant’s code that is categorized as a travel merchant code for airlines, hotels/motels, timeshares, campgrounds, car rentals, cruises, travel agencies, discount travel sites, buses, trains, taxi/limos, ferries, tolls, bridges, highways, parking lots or garages. Purchases using credit cards issued to authorized users or joint cardholders will not be eligible.

Umm, I thought before it was just based on any spending to get the $400. I could be on my couch and spend $4000 to get the $400. Now to get the $100 travel credit requires actual travel, and the $300 is based on couch spend. If it was a recurring annual travel reimbursement, then I could see it as a positive thing.

You sir, are correct. I was mistaken. Cash back or statement credit is less than a penny a point. 13,425 points for $100 of non-travel redemptions. Has to be in $100 increments for non-travel too.

I would paste the other footnotes from the offer, but Navy Fed offers under my login is no longer showing it available for me.

Under footnote #2 it says: “Up to a $100 statement credit will be applied to your account when your card is used for a Qualifying Purchase at eligible travel merchants”. Then it lists what qualifies as you state. It then further states that: “Maximum statement credit accumulation for the Travel Credit is $100”.

The way I read it it looks like you get the 30,000 bonus points after $3,000 in spend and then if you make a travel related purchase as part of the $3,000 spend, you get the additional $100.

They could word it better but don’t think it means the whole $3,000 spend must be travel related.

My comments work only about 25% of the time.

Are you advising us to only pay attention to your comments 25% of the time, because they are mostly pointless? Thanks for the warning. Sounds like we should just skip them altogether then, with those odds.

Didn’t get this offer but did have a 5-month $50 min 3.00% APY CD offer

There is a separate post about that offer. Pretty decent deal IMHO, but it’s a short term solution for semi-liquid savings. Others feel 3% is still not worth the time or effort and use their funds elsewhere.
