Automating Marriott’s 45,000 Points Per Year Social Media Program

Marriott is currently offering up to 45,000 points per yea by participating in their #RewardsPoints social media program. It’s possible to automate most of this by using IFTTT (we used this before for setting up mobile notifications for hot deals). Thanks to NateLundquist on /r/churning.

General Instructions

  1. Make sure your account is set to earn Marriott points
  2. First you’ll want to connect your Twitter account to Marriott. I’d recommend setting up a separate Twitter account so you don’t spam your followers. You’ll receive 250 Marriott points for doing that here. Then get another 125 points by following them on Twitter as well.
  3. Create an IFTTT account if you don’t have one already

50 Points Per Day

You can receive 50 points per day by sending out a tweet, we can automate this by doing the following:

  • Create a new applet. To do this click your name in the top right and then ‘New Applet’

  • Click “this” then “date and time” then “every day at..” and select any time
  • Click “that” then “twitter” then “post a tweet” add the following “#MembersGetIt #RewardsPoints #FindYourRoute #MRpoints.”

Retweet Marriott’s Posts

Marriott sometimes gives you additional points for retweeting their tweets (e.g this).

  • Use this Applet, click turn on
  • Under search for add: “from:MarriottRewards exclude:replies”
  • You could probably add “RT for” as well as that seems to be what they use for retweet point opportunities

Again big thanks to NateLundquist & WickedColdfront on /r/churning for putting this together.

  • Is this working for anyone? I hope I didn't miss the boat on setting this up. Please respond if it's not too late to setup.

  • Hi Doc,
I got a strange email from Marriott today:
    -----
Apologies — we weren’t able to award points for your recent post. Here are the most common reasons why this might have happened:

Your Marriott Rewards account is configured to earn miles instead of points. Please change this in your Marriott Rewards account settings.
You have reached the annual maximum of 2,000 points earned through #MRpoints. You can earn points through #MRpoints again starting next year.
Your Marriott Rewards account may no longer be active. Please contact Marriott Rewards Customer Care to resolve the issue.

I just hit 2000 points on it and now it seems the annual limit is reached. Is that the case?

  • here's the automated email i received this morning from marriott. It was not a reply to any message i sent

    • Same thing. I think it might be related to the fact that IFTTT has a 15-min granularity for scheduling the events — MR might either have too many folks at all timeslots that overflows their processing, or, perhaps more likely as I can't imagine it to be all that popular in such a short time frame, they might have decided to outright blacklist Tweets done at the applicable times.

Another possible explanation is that perhaps IFTTT leaks the client name (app name) of itself, thus making it trivial for MR to ignore the tweets from such a specific client.

    • What did you tweet? I've been trying (manually only) for 3 days and no points. New twitter user. Thanks for any tips.

  • When I try to link my Twitter and Marriott accounts etc. I get a statement that I need to allow them access to change my Twitter profile, post for me, delete posts for me, etc. etc. Does this really require giving Marriott that kind of access and control to my Twitter account?

If so could someone please explain why and how that could ever be a good idea?

If it does not require that then could someone please explain how that is so despite the page that says so?

  • I can't login to my & SOs Marriot account now! Even password reset doesn't work. Says I've used the password. I even tried a new one I know I haven't used.

  • Just got an email saying my 50 points had posted for the day- first one in 5 days- but it won't let me sign in to view the points anymore... weird

    • Wait, we can get point every day? I thought this was only for when they release their specific promotions.

How do we get points every day?

      • Supposedly, you can get 50 points every day. But in practice (and assuming my account hasn't been shut down), it appears to be sporadic at best.

  • Pretty sure this is dead. Had all the points earned since I started six days ago removed from my account this morning.
