Our Verdict

Previously this card was often 70,000 miles or 70,000 miles + $100. This link is supposed to be in flight, but working elsewhere as well. Standard bonus on this card is currently 80,000 miles so this is an extra 5,000 really. Will be added to our best credit card bonuses

  • DP: 3 cards opened in the last 12 months (7/24), opened a BoA checking account two weeks ago (no previous relationship), approved automatically

  • For me, Ascent might be a better option for the first roughly 2 years (say spend $4k in the first 3 months to get it for the 1st year and another 2k to get it for the 2nd year).

I'm located in the west coast, but I only travel Alaska during peak seasons due to schedule of 2 kids. For example, Hawaii around Christmas or Thanksgiving and I am finding a hard time to get reasonable reward flights during these times. For example, around Christmas one-way award flight is easily 50k points but the dollar price is just around $500. So the Summit companion pass would cost me 2*50k (main passenger) + 2*25k (companion) while the Ascent pass would cost me 2*$500 + ~120. The issue is that I am forced to redeem overpriced reward flights if I want to use companion pass.

  • I just opened a BAnk of America checking account today to bypass the 3/12 rule. So now it's 7/12. How long should I wait before it takes effect so I can apply for this card?

    • Not sure if you already applied, but I opened my first checking account (and first relationship ever) with BoA two weeks ago for checking account bonus, I was 3/12, and was auto-approved today.

  • Here’s the OFFICIAL url to the in-flight offer for the Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® Credit Card, instead of that affiliate link that’s been going around.

If you’re applying, I recommend asking a flight attendant for their ID so they can also get credit/commission for referring you — it benefits both sides.

You can use this as the promotional code: 1083742 — he’s a sweet flight attendant i met, and it would him get credit for the referral while you still get the points.

  • Seattle to Boston direct first class is 60k each way (120k round trip) ... no possible better deal than that? I fly that for business

    • I got the old Alaska Visa Signature card less than a month ago, and was approved now for the Atmos Ascent ($95 AF), even though that is essentially the updated version of the same card. I did have to call reconsideration to get the approval, though.

      • Would you mind sharing what recon number you called for BoA? The numbers of DoC I called refused to recon for me...

  • Fun DP. The only card in a decade I have ever been denied for was an Alaska card. It was the first BoA card I'd ever applied for, I'd been a customer for 15 years, and at the time had over $200,000 in assets with them.

  • The points have good value if you use them on international flights to Europe. you can Premium Economy for 30K or lie flats in business class for 45K - that is on American metal. YMMV. But those mile rates are about 10-15K less than booking directly with American points. The companion certificate, blah. I have had that before. By the time you add in taxes you are not really saving much.

    • I’ve been looking at flights to Europe and I’m seeing they’re significantly cheaper with AA points than with Alaska points, like 19K vs 27.5K for keconomy. There’s no availability of premium economy or business on the flights I’ve been looking at.

    • Barclays doesn't have an Alaska card. They have a Hawaiian card and they're staying like that for now which is why I closed mine cause I'm not paying another AF.

Also, Barclays is more willing to open lines of credit for new people.

      • Since Hawaii miles are gonna be the same value as Alaska miles, Barclays card gives 80k bonus and BOA gives 85k, it seems BOA is better?
