Update 6/23/25: I just want to reiterate that the new rules are not only negative, but might also have a positive outcome of being able to get another Sapphire bonus in less than 48 months. Reader Ashly reports getting approved in under 24 months from her prior Sapphire bonus without any popup issues. (After this update posted, many others in the comments also concurred with data points of receiving the Sapphire bonus in less than 48 months.)
Update 6/23/25: This is what the pop up looks like.
Original Post 6/17/25:
Chase has said to various media outlets that the are doing away with the 48 month signup bonus eligibility restriction in favor of a proprietary determination by the bank of signup bonus eligibility.
Theoretically someone might be deemed by Chase to be eligible in less than 48 months. Practically Chase seems to be getting stricter and might deem someone ineligible even beyond 48 months. It will all depend on how profitable Chase deems you or whatever other factors they consider.
Chase will introduce a notice during the application flow which will let you know if you are not eligible for the bonus and give you the choice to continue or cancel the application. This makes sense: since the bonus determination is variable based on your customer history, they’ll let you know during the application if you are eligible for the bonus.
We are transitioning away from the family of cards every 48 month eligibility to a same product premium eligibility. The timeframe will be longer than 48 months but we aren’t able to share additional details.
American Express has long had this system whereby they’ll let you know during the application flow if you are eligible for a bonus. It’s often referred to as ‘AmEx pop up jail’ whereby someone attempts to apply for a card and gets a ‘pop up’ notice from Amex informing them they are eligible for the bonus.
I’m not sure exactly how the notice will display with Chase, but we might as well call this new Chase bonus denial, ‘Chase pop up jail’.
These changes will go in effect on June 23, 2025.
For now I’m only seeing this new change for the Sapphire Reserve and Preferred cards. It’s possible that all other cards, for the time being, will not have this new notification system and will run with all of the rules that we’ve seen until now.
New account bonus offer eligibility for either card will be based on factors including previously earned bonus offers and the number of cards opened and closed, among others.
Consumers applying through most channels will be notified during the application process if they are not eligible for a bonus offer and given the choice to continue the application or cancel the application with no impact to their credit score.
Over time, it’s possible that this pop-up method will eventually replace the whole 5/24 rule, as Chase will decide with each application whether to allow a bonus or not. For now, we haven’t heard any mention of changes to 5/24.

For those that got the PUJ, did you guys click on "Cancel my application (no impact to credit score)?
Are there any data-points re: Can a current Reserve holder get approved and earn the SUB for a new Preferred (while still keeping the Reserve)?
Also ... Does the pop-up display for all applications, or only if Chase has deemed the person ineligible for the SUB. In other words, if I do NOT receive any pop-up, does that mean I am eligible for the SUB, and will receive the SUB if I am approved and meet the spending requirement? Thanks!
You cannot earn a SUB on a sapphire product if you already own one. Chase changed the rule where you can own both sapphire products but you won't get the SUB on the 2nd one.
It clearly states in the pop up screenshot above that "Current holders of the personal Chase Sapphire cards are also ineligible."
I am not even sure why anyone would want to hold both the CSR and CSP cards. Even if ultimately you want to get the CSP but want the CSR bonuses, just downgrade to a CSP next year.
So if I downgrade the CSP to a freedom card then I would become eligible for the CSR? Is there a wait period before applying?
DP:
Applied (2nd time, 1st time below) and got pop up saying I’m not eligible for SUB due to the number of credit cards I’ve recently opened (10/24, none is Chase card), credit report pulled at this step. Proceed without the bonus and got approved for the card.
I have the CSP and CSR before, then downgraded to no annual fee Sapphire couple of years ago. Applied first time in June, got declined. Later Chase sent me snail mail saying decline was in error and I can apply again. Called in and PC the no fee Sapphire to Freedom, waited 1 day and applied again.
On the first pop up jail did you click on cancel application?
nice DP. but this is super interesting. so what happened during 1st app? PUJ or just straight decline? u shouldve got 1st stage PUJ no SUB but u could still get CSR. good to hear u PC vs other n00bs who still app w/ other sapphires still active.
looks like ur 2nd app went straight to 2nd stage PUJ w/ HP which rates u based on CR. not SUB rules which is 1st stage PUJ. but nice to see u still got the card w/ 10/24.
AI at work creating PUJ. Genisys is coming
DP: Opened CSP 2024-10-28, never had CSR, applied today and pop up says I am not eligible for the bonus for CSR. So if you had the bonus for CSP it makes you ineligible for CSR's bonus? This is sad
Same situation for me, I got the CSP bonus back in 9/2024 and couldn't get this one as a result. I called recon and was offered the option to proceed with the application but not receive the sign-up bonus and I declined. Was I misunderstanding how this works? The post explicitly states "might also have a positive outcome of being able to get another Sapphire bonus in less than 48 months" thus I was surprised...
I think it is still a black box right now on what they mean its possible that you can earn the bonus in less than 48 months. For now I will assume that means at least 24 months but I wouldn't be surprised if that really meant like if you were between 40-47 months that you are eligible. I assume you were also under 5/24 to remove that variable in your data point.
DP: Denied CSR with pop-up after credit pull. Reason stated in denial letter was too many recent new accounts. At 6/24. No previous CSR bonus but CSP bonuses 55 months and 106 months ago. Did hold CSR previously from PC.
ur DP is confusing. u got denied or just denied the SUB? did u have any sapphires active?
looks like u went straight to 2nd stage PUJ w/ HP which rates u based on CR. not SUB rules which is 1st stage PUJ. but ur only at 6/24. so did the PUJ say u can still get the card but no SUB?
i dont get what type of denial u got.
You got denied because you're past 5/24.
DP. I am at 1/24 so no worries there. My CSP 48 month was 6/22/25, so I PCd to the CFU on 6/15/25. Saw the changes to the sign up, decided to wait till 6/24/25. Used my P2 referral link to P1 for the CSP. Got approved instantly with no pop up jail. Bonus tracker for 75k is in app.
nice work. u had tons of stats working for u. pretty much slam dunk.
but why CSP tho? why not CSR then PC down?
DP: 9/24, last sapphire bonus 45 months ago, still holding that CSP.
CSR instant denial. letter says only reason is "you have this card or received a cardmember bonus." that CSR was closed >> 48 months ago...
Meanwhile I'm seeing others > 5/24 but clearing the 48 month rule, approved without bonus but then the tracker shows up.
Chase is all over the place with this, I'll try again when I clear 48 months...
I question your IQ when the pop up clearly states that you cannot earn a SUB when you are still holding a Chase Sapphire product.
It clearly states in the screenshot above “Current holders of the personal Chase Sapphire cards are also ineligible.”.
You're 9/24 *and* still holding a Sapphire card, what the hell did you expect?
seriously? cmon art. no words for u at this point.
FYI. 2 stage PUJ deployment system. need to see how this mechanism works post HP. which is pretty fucked up wen u have pre-HP PUJ system but stays dormant. so u wasted a HP and still being told u suck dick.

my guess is 1st stage PUJ for SUB only based on SUB rules. then 2nd stage no SUB based on chase dont like u rules but still want ur AF business. they just dont wanna pay u to join. sounds like chase wanna pwn amex PUJ.
Last CSR sign up bonus earned Jan 2023 and was at 2/24 (have been churning through my partner in the past two years). Got instant approval for CSR.
Is your old CSR that you got in 2023 still open? Or did you downgrade that? Do you have an active CSP? Or did you also downgrade your CSP?
what are ur stats for new accnts and inquiries x/6 x/12? assume u dont have CSP?
