Discover Q4 2025 Categories 5%: Amazon, Drugstores

Discover has released the 5% categories on the Discover IT card for the fourth quarter of 2025, October through December:

  • Drugstores
  • Amazon

Amazon is the category they’ve always done in Q4. Drugstores is a nice second option, and can be used to purchase gift cards at drugstores as well.

For a lot of people, the Amazon category isn’t useful since they always get 5% back with their Prime Visa card. It could still be useful in conjunction with a Discover – Shop With Points deal when the balance typically goes onto the Discover card, so definitely worth activating.

  • This is the first time I recall a card I have offering 5% at drugstores, at least since the Chase Freedom Flex, which offers a year-round 3% at drugstores, debuted.

  • Darn, got spoiled by the rotating Walmart/Target/Paypal/Apple Pay categories. 2025 has been a bust for rotating cards. Was it last year when Discover did the 6% at Walmart quarter? That may have been targeted, I forget.

  • As someone who finds more value milking the 30day free trials then actually subscribing to Prime for the card. 5% Amazon is always welcome, use Discover throughout the quarter at Amazon, and when it's about to end, buy a big gift card to max it out. Balance itself is easily spent before the next card offers a 5% Amazon category.

  • They’ve also done Walmart the past couple of years, hopefully this means it’s going back to Chase this year.

      • Damn! I was going to buy a Bentley with my Chase Freedom Flex. But this Rolls Royce quarter sucks. Hopefully they will bring Bentley next quarter.

        • I'm sorry to say this, but you just don't fit the Chase lifestyle. You're just not what Chase is looking for in a relationship. Chase is a RR type bank. If you want a Bentley, then go on over to idk maybe OCBC?

PS: You definitely won't fit the Amex lifestyle either, with your Bentley. Amex is a Mercedes-Benz type bank.

      • Even by Chase standards the Norwegian Cruise Lines category in Q1 was something else. Genuinely what the hell was that

  • I am seeing activation fees of $8.95 on VISA and MasterCard gift cards at CVS and Walgreens now

    If you buy 3 of them, you end up with $75 - ($8.95 x 3) + ($8.95 x 3 x 1%) = $48.4185 which is approximately 4.8%

Not as nice as when the fees were $5.95, but it is still a nice gain.

    • Why not buy one card of value $225 (some variable visa gift cards have $8 charge) instead of 3 $75 cards?

      • @guest_2133249 be very wary about buying Visa cards at CVS. At least in every CVS I’ve been to, their flavor of vanilla is run by InComm which have become absolutely almost impossible to use online. (Won’t work at Amazon, etc). Unless you have a surefire way to liquidate these, I’d recommend a different Discover 5% strategy….

  • "It could still be useful..." ... to those of us who think Prime is a ripoff and therefore don't have the Prime Visa. ;-)

    • There’s always the sad (mostly nerfed) Affinity FCU 5% Amazon card. I guess it’s not the worst thing in the world though with 0% FTF on a no AF card plus a bunch of 2% categories.

      • @Trevor I’m jealous you actually got the Affinity card, when I applied several years back they requested I send in paystubs (to verify income) and later, utility bills to verify (assumedly) my address. Never had that happen to me for any other card issuer, big or small! Needless to say, I don’t have that card. 😀
