Our Verdict
Good deal for real bookings. You can use this to effectively buy points at a discount rate. When you make booking it’s made clear that you’re actually purchasing the points and if you cancel your reservation they will redeposit the full points value rather than points + cash. I think the best deal is to purchase 20,000 points for $115 (normal rate, $86.25 with this discount). That works out to be 0.43125¢ per point. Somebody please correct me if you can get it cheaper than that because I’m not confident at all.
The issue I have is that I can’t actually get the discount rate to show up, so it’s possible this is targeted or IHG hasn’t set it up properly.

Right now you dont have to do the cancelling trick because IHG is offering 100% bonus points when buying points until 11/03
So if you buy 30K points its $345 and you get 60K points which is basically $115 for 20K the same as the points plus cash canceling trick.
(Its especially handy for the people who dont have IHG points in their account and therefore cant do the book/cancel trick because they dont have the 20K points to do a cash and points booking).

FWIW: My established and regularly used account was not targeted; My wife's new and never before used account was.
So on my "established" account, I just got an email offering 100% more points (until Nov 3) if I buy 5000 or more. The cost for 20,000 points (10,000 + 10,000) with this deal is $135.
This morning we got 20,000 points under my wife's new account for $86.25.
Just illustrating how good this original deal is if you can get the offer.
I wonder how you get targeted, wife and I not eligible, we weren't either the last time, so frustrating, because we need tons of points.
When I attempted to make my cash and points booking, I received a message saying, “As a Platinum Elite member, you are entitled to a 25% discount. Discount applied below.”
Whats the average value of IHG point?
I've never bought IHG points, but this offer is tempting, especially since I have an IHG Chase card which would earn further points. It's a bit hard to "gin up" these points like you can with credit cards with Hilton and Hyatt. I'm usually careful spending my IHG points for this reason, and it would be nice to have some points I can use less carefully!
Unfortunately, you will not earn bonus points on the co-brand card with point-and-cash bookings. You'll be buying points from a third party. (IIRC, points.com) My personal experience.
Not correct. Have done it and you do get 5X using IHG card.
If you book/cancel with cash/points and use the IHG card you get 5points per dollar for the points you bought.
If you buy staright up points from IHG you dont get 5 points per dollar because youre essentially buying from a 3rd party and its not considered an IHG purchase...
Wow, that's kind of surprising, given that the purchase is being made on the IHG website. And, jeez, you're paying to stay in an IHG hotel! I wonder if anyone has ever complained to Chase about this.
BTW, has anyone earned cashback for one of these points-and-cash bookings -- especially one that they later cancelled because they just want the points? Obviously, one's entitlement to the cashback is tenuous on a cancelled booking, but it's not crazy, given that IHG is keeping the cash!
targeted offer; wife & i both have ihg cc, but wife didn't see the offer; went ahead to pay 2 nights for $172 on mine...if cancelling, will get 40k pts
How many nights can you book through this trick? Should I cancel right away or wait for a few days?
Also, can we stack this with the $100 master card offer? Will they count a stay if we cancel?
If you cancel a stay it won't count, not sure about the other questions sorry
Not stackable with the MC offer as Points and Cash is not an eligible rate.
Makes sense
I just booked 4 nights in one reservation. ( $345 with 80k points)...canceled right aways, get 160K points back.
Will I also get 10% Rebate from Chase for C+P?
Pretty sure you only get the rebate on completed stays right?
Right. I said we would earn the bonus points from IHG card for the dollar amaount.
No. But you will get 5points/$ for that $345
Regardless, this is the best price I have seen to buy IHG points.
Yup
For some reason I'm not understanding the best way of taking advantage of this offer. I'm targeted and traveling during those dates. Can someone clarify?
Some people use it to buy points for future stays as mentioned in the post. But it can also be good just to use for regular bookings as well.
Isn't this 20,000 pts for $115 or ($86.25)? A 60,000 per night room cost 40,000 + $115( for the 20,000 pts). FYI couldn't see the discount on three different accounts.
Yes, my points valuation was right but I wrote 40k instead of 20k points. Fixed now
Ok brain isn't working today. Can't figure out how to buy 40k pts for $86.25...
Should be 20k pts not 40k
Ah, thank you for clarifying. I'm not going insane!
You can purchase 40K points for $86.25 by searching for Cash + Point stays at hotels that require 60K points for a free night.
I "booked" the Intercontinental Le Grand in Paris using this trick. Once you've confirmed your cash and points reservation for 40K points and $86.25, you can then cancel your stay, and you'll be left with 40K points. Voila! Does this make sense? I'm happy to explain further!
I know the trick. I am just saying you can't buy 40k IHG points for $87 anywhere. You said correctly that you bought the room for 40K point AND $86.25. When you cancelled you probably got back 60K points. Which translates to ~$90/20K points.
I guess doc's calculation is screwed up on this one. I have this promotion and the least price I could see is $45/10k points, before taking into account the 5points/$ on IHG card and 10% points back when redeemed.
