Our Verdict

The fees on two $200 Visa gift cards should be $13.90; after the $10 discount, you’ll end up paying just $3.90 in fees for ~$400 in INK spend which is a pretty good deal. The deal could also make sense for those with BBVA cards currently earning 5%, and for those with 5% SimplyCash cards.

Excellent time to use up those $10 off $50 Amex Offer’s if you were targeted. You can use at least 8 cards at Office Depot if the cashier has no problem with it.

Office Depot/Max has reduced the deal is two ways from previous promos: it used to come as $20 while this one is only $10, and it used to be able to do two deals in one transaction ($600 in one go would work) while now each $300 has to be done separately. It’ll depend on the cashier whether they allow you to do more than one deal.

  • Everywhere cards are $4.95. I bought 2 at $200 and made $.10 😀 This obviously doesn't include the 2000 UR + $ 8 OD Rewards credit.

    • Had a lot of problems with those type cards. Besides, my region doesn't stock those much yet have plenty of cards we don't want. I miss the days when OM sold 500s to cc customers. Then they went cash only for 500s but then seemed to realize true money launderers just want to use cash to buy cards since cc transactions are traceable and they needed a way to turn all their illegally gotten cash into other forms. Cc is still the safest way. Who carries around that much cash anyhow?

      • There are select markets that receive rewards on all purchases, including gift cards.

  • The register does not allow split payment as it used to be. The cashier and I triaged a few times and there were simply no way to do so.

      • Charles is correct, Office Depot / Max POS system no longer allow split payments. Tried (3) different stores.

        • Seems odd that they'd disallow split tender which is something fairly common among major reatilers.
I wonder if it's only disabled for gift card purchases. In any case, I'll update the Payments Workshop. Thanks

          • Seems like a YMMV thing. I was able to split between 4 cards today when buying these VGCs.

          • Spoke to corporate manager that happen to be at the location today. Split tender isn't possible between more than 2 credit cards. The includes one debit card and credit card. This is for all purchases not just GC.

    • Really? There has been a lot of YMMV about this. Can I ask which kind of WM and where it is?

      • I've never had an issue. I've used Super Walmart in Covington, LA as well as 2 Neighborhood WM's in area.

        • Doesn't work in all locations. Careful. Many have gotten stuck with those Everywhere cards, so make sure you can spend them normally if problems. Then when they call the issuer to complain they tell them that it says right on the package that these aren't accepted everywhere.

  • We'll see if this deal actually makes it through the entire sale week. The last two OD/OM didn't. Of course, this one isn't terribly lucrative, so "maybe."

BTW, are there no variable Visa GCs at any of these stores these days?

My local OD shut down years ago, and with my nearest store now 25 miles away, I'm not going to bother. But if I did have a local store, and they didn't hassle me, I'd probably pick up a couple just to keep feeding my Ultimate Rewards account. Is there anyone in the history of this game ever said "I have too many Ultimate Rewards" points to use? :)

    • I have saved up about 1M ultimate rewards points to travel my country with a family 5 but now a dictator wannabe ruling my country and can't go back to my country last 2 years. Don't know what to do with the points.

  • Still debating with myself. I am just getting the last round paid off.Statement closing date will be the middle of the week. IF I can make some math work, how much of it can I put off on my Citi CC instead of MO purchases.

Citi accepts debit card payments on account. I did some of that last round.

    • Trying to find out the procedure to pay Citi with debit cards. Any explanation available?

      • Which kind work these days? Also I thought people were getting shut down for this.

        • The data below is from this thread:

          http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1550209-paying-citi-cards-debit-cards-including-prepaid-debit-cards-86.html

Debit cards that work for paying Citi cards over the phone:
All debit cards attached to regular checking accounts (Alaska - some have not gotten miles; SunTrust - no miles; UFB Direct [$2000 daily limit] - no miles)
          Green Dot (permanent card)
          H&R Block Emerald
          JH Preferred
          MVD (shutdowns have been reported)
Paypal Business Debit Mastercard (no 1% cb)
Pennywise Power "payday rewards" Visa cards (Bancorp, MB financial Bank N.A)
Simple Card - see post #347
T-Mobile (temp and perm [shutdowns have been reported])
          Univision Mastercard
          Visa Buxx (NW)
          Wells Fargo

It would be good to stay acquainted with that thread. It will save you from getting a bunch of GC you can't liquidate easily.

          • I did a $100.00 US Bank MCGC to Citi successfully about a month ago. Only worked after registering the card on line.

  • I'm looking forward to this. The customer service at Safeway/Randalls is way worse than OD/OM, IME, plus I can't believe that people would willingly wait in these yuge lines at Randalls — even Walmart often has shorter lines, depending on the store.

I do all my grocery shopping at Trader Joe's, and some at HEB, and I pity the folks that do it at Randalls. Just today, in front of me, some older woman bought 200 bucks worth of food — I'm thinking to myself, wah, that'd be quite a lot of points! But she has her checkbook ready, and writes out a check, ensuring to get the correct amount from the screen. I don't even remember how to write a check anymore!

  • Awesome. Time to nail my local OM hard next week. No one better stop me. Hope to do $40k next week and finish off my Ink+ for the year.

    • LOL, in how many days? Are you going to cycle the limit?

Remember, the last two times they ran this, before mid-April, both times they've cut the deal short, prior to the expiration date. With this attitude, come Friday evening, this one will likely be gone, too! Good luck!
