Plastiq Now Allow Payments With Discover (2.5% Fee)

It’s now possible to pay your bills using Plastiq and cards running on the Discover payment network. The standard rate of 2.5% will apply. I’m a bit surrpised that they didn’t launch with a promotional rate given that recently you could get 2.25% for American Express and 1.75% for Mastercard payments. Keep in mind there are some issues with Visa currently and it’s coding as small business for American Express cards (double rewards).

Hat tip to Plastiq blog (looks like Frequent Miler just beat me to posting as well)

  • I don't use plastiq.com any more, when they showed "sent" status, the check could actually not send yet. And their processing time can take as long as 3 business days to get to the "sent" status. For a mortgage with 11/1 due date, if you hit the submit bottom on 10/24 and "forget about it" as they promote , then you may be wrong. They asked me a screen shot on 10/26 PM and if not provided that within 24 hours which would be 10/27 PM then they just cancel the payment. I only found out I got the screen print request email on 10/27 morning in office, so sent back to them immediately, they processed my request on 10/28 PM and I saw the "sent" message and a check number in my email on 10/31, so I am 100% sure this check would not make 11/1 due date. Final post date on my mortgage was 11/10. Also I checked with my mortgage bank that was told even a check was physical received say on 11/5, but they had to wait till it was clear so there would be another 2-3 business days needed for them. And post date is "effective" date so even they received on 11/1 but cleared on 11/4, they posted it as 11/4. That being said, at least for me, it took 2.5 weeks from make a payment to payment posted on account. The safe point for me will be that I make a payment on 15th of the current month for it to be posted in time on next month's statement.

I've switched back using BB or Serve now. Buy paypal my cash card with credit card at CVS, use PPBDC to load on BB and Serve, that's 2% double cash card rewards minus $3.95 fee per $500 + 1% PPBDC signature purchase. That's $11.05 for every $500 spending! That way I don't even bother leaving my referral link to hope for some fee free points. Save money, save time.

  • I was excited when i got this email, hoping there would be a promo with it but no such luck, on another note I did have a random 3% cashback promo for 6 months on a discover more card. So there is hope if discover decides to swing a promo your way.

  • Are they trying to gain customers who are cash poor but credit rich who can pay bills and go into revolving debt?

That sounds like how most people use credit cards. So yes.

  • Hey William, this may seem like a random question, but are you from the UK? There's a clue in the title of this post.

  • Unless you have the Miles card in your first year of double cash back I don't see the point. Even then, its .5% cashback. What am I missing here? Are they trying to gain customers who are cash poor but credit rich who can pay bills and go into revolving debt? Obviously during promos the math may add up and be worthwhile for some.

    • The 2.5% cost overwhelms all rewards on all cards, not just Discover.. Practically Plastiq is useful only with promos or for signup bonus spends.
