Update To Comments

Just letting everybody know that we have done an overhaul to the comment system. It may look different to before and you may notice new features and possibly some old features missing. If there is something missing (or added) that you don’t like please let us know in the comments below. This new system should hopefully allow for users to soon be able to create their own login to the site, eventually referral threads will be moved so that only users with an account can share their link to help limit referral abuse.

Features that will be added/removed:

  • Gray background showing again after a few comments
  • Load more comment button not at the bottom of comments
  • Hide blank avatars
  • Remove fade out on comment id & user profile so that both are permanently displayed
  • Fix tagging
  • Post title in email notifications
  • Upvoting is currently turned off, will be turned back on once unlimited upvoting has been fixed
  • Comments going off the screen will be fixed
  • Adding gray space between each comment to differentiate it
  • Comment text background changed from gray to white

    • @guest_2133548,

Are you saying that you only made 1 comment in this post today and then edited it twice? If so, that's a nice find by you.

I always wondered why I saw the same comment (or what seemed like the same comment) appear multiple times in my email.

BTW, I happened to see when you made the initial comment and I clicked on it and it vanished. I thought that it went to moderation or Spam.

      • Sorry, mixed some stuff up... one of them went to moderation then spam, so it never triggered a notification. #2133548 lasted through multiple auto-moderations triggered by the key string. I think it temporarily vanishes when the edit triggers the auto-moderation.

I just added and removed the key string here.

        • @guest_2133557,

#2133548 is the 1st comment from you in this post that I received by email. If you made 1 before that, it didn't make it to the email stage so it must have been went to moderation or Spam immediately. Do you remember what you wrote in that comment?

I noticed that the timestamp for that comment matched what it showed in the email. I then received 2 emails later, presumably of you editing said comment. Is that correct?

Can you clarify what you mean by "key string"?

Did you completely edit #2133557? The reason why I ask is the timestamp matches you writing "That one went to spam. This one lasted through multiple edits with auto-moderation toggled by the key string."

I then received the current version of the comment several minutes later. Since it has the timestamp for the 1st emailed comment, it makes me think that you edited your comment and that I received an email for the initial comment and for the edit.

This is what I was speculating happened in my initial reply to you. If this is the case, do you have any idea why I don't recall ever seeing multiple versions of my own comments come via email?

Is it because I usually only make minor edits (eg adding a couple of words), while you seem to change the entire comment sometimes!

          • Yeah, there was one before #2133548 that immediately went to moderation (on purpose) and then spam, so no email. I think it went to spam because I only added a couple characters to try to get it out of moderation.

By key string, I meant a key sequence of characters. Adding it to the existing comment triggered the auto-moderation and made it vanish. Editing it out got it out of auto-moderation and generated the new email(s).

Edits that don't post out of moderation don't generate new emails.

          • @guest_2134005,

#1. Did you type "TB" or something else to purposely make it go to moderation? What was your reasoning for that?

#2. What was the key string that you typed that triggered auto-moderation? BTW, by "auto-moderation", do you simply mean that the system moderated it rather than @2 or @6 doing it?

#3. In the TrD post, you mentioned that you had found a hack. Can you let me know what you discovered exactly?

#4. Are you implying that you figured out a way to have your comment into moderation (which is easy), out of moderation (which would be really nice to know) or both?

          • #1 and #2: Not too long ago, I noticed my comment was automatically held for review (that's why I called it auto-moderation) because I had unintentionally done #1. Then I "fixed" it and noticed the comment posted right away (more "automatic" moderation behavior). It appears you can get a comment out of this moderation review by fixing whatever put it there. Then it'll post right away and send the associated notifications.

#3 and #4: I intentionally edited the comment to trigger the auto-moderation, made my desired edits, and finally "fixed" it to have it post right away with the associated notifications.

          • @guest_2134458,

Isn't editing a comment going to moderation quite a risk though? I may or may not have told you this but I used to do that and many times my comment ended up going to Spam and then my subsequent comments went there also. That was a nightmare for both @2 and me. That's why not I try to refrain from editing any comments with the "!".

BTW, I have to manually type your comment # almost every time that I tag you because "an" is so common for part of other "user accounts"!

          • Haven't really had that issue with the hack. I'm not sure how the system decides to send an edit to spam. Also, I find that if a comment goes to spam, I can still open it back up to copy the text.

I've made a habit of typing or copying and pasting everyone's comment number.

          • @guest_2134458,

I accidentally tagged someone else at 1st in my previous comment. Talk about a coincidence!

  • I submitted a comment elsewhere with a search term in the search box so I couldn't see the result of my submission. If it didn't show after reloading the page, does that mean it probably went to spam?

      • In my experience, a comment that goes to moderation still stays visible to the poster with a moderation indicator, whereas a spam comment gets replaced with a spam placeholder and vanishes.

          • When my comment has an orange exclamation mark next to it, is it under moderation? I tested this in a new session without entering my email and I still see it after reloading the page in the same browser session.

          • @guest_2084006,

The orange "!" is supposed to mean that it went to moderation. However, I've had situations where many comments in a row of mine had the "!" but they all ended up in Spam and I had to ask @2 to pull them out.

However, recently I figured out a way to tell if your comment went to moderation or Spam. After seeing the orange "!", click on the "i" to the right of your name.

Check the time next to "Last Activity:". If the time matches the time in that comment, it means that your comment went to moderation. If it shows an earlier time, your comment likely went to Spam and will not ever get posted unless you email Will.

          • Cool, thanks for pointing that out @guest_2085464

Now to play around with the editing behavior...

          • Yes orange exclamation mark means under moderation. It's possibly the cache didn't update when you reloaded it the first time

          • I guess it disappears after a few minutes or something. Not sure how consistent the behavior is. E.g. sometimes I edit a comment and it still shows the original version for a while when I refresh the page, but it shows the edited version immediately in a different browser session.

  • For anyone still subscribed to this post, I have some important info in my below comment that could be of interest to some of you regarding tagging.

    • You can still search by name, in the search box click the three lines next to it and select 'author' and it'll show up.
