Our Verdict
This is a fairly frequent offer from AmEx & hotels.com, I can’t see it being particularly popular due to the current circumstances but 20% is basically as good as it gets when it comes to Hotels.com gift cards. Other recent deals have been for 10% or 15% off. Hotels.com recently announced some extension of status and free night certificates due to COVID-19.

amex sends me the offer used email but cashstar never lets my order go through
I also have a 10% cashback Citi Offer at Hotels.com which makes for a good stack for the remainder of my purchase after I use this Hotels.com giftcard.
Hopefully their rewards program doesn't change for the worse in 2023 as part of the Expedia One Key homogenization. Twenty percent off is still 20%, though.
That said, I'll continue to boycott Cashstar.
Every freakin' time I attempt to buy one of these damned Hotels.com gift cards, Cashstar cancels my purchase before I receive it. That's even if I've linked there directly from the Amex offer in my account. Even if I've turned off my VPN. Even if I've completed their seemingly endless stream of reCaptchas. Even if I've enabled remote content in their emails so they can track me.
SCREW THEM. I don't need $10 that bad.
You can just buy it from a seller for $41.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but gift cards like this don’t count for Amex welcome offers, correct ?
If you travel a lot, it's good to have some discounted Hotels.com money -- especially when you want to (or need to) stay at a non-chain property. You can't pay for all hotels.com hotels with the gift card, but about half of them work. The website makes it easy to tell which participate with a "check box." You can usually combine it with a promotion code that takes off another 10%. A solid deal in many situations.
BTW, keep track of when and where you bought each gift card. You can combine gift cards for a larger discount, but sometimes hotels.com wants to know when and where you bought the gift card.
