Be wary of Hotels.com gift cards sold for more than 70% face value.

It was never very easy to use. If you don’t know about this, just try to dummy book on the site where you redeem their GCs, you’ll see that a good portion (typically over a half) of available hotels on hotels.com in a specific area aren’t pay able using hotels.com GC and you have to folk out more cash despite having their GCs.

To make it even harder to use, their ‘combining balance’ (very much needed due to 1 GC per booking policy) feature has been under ‘maintenance’ for a few YEARS now and you have to call their CSR where you’ll be put on hold for half an hour and then given a quiz about intricate details like original purchase date and amount of each card you want to combine (if you can’t answer them correctly? well, tough luck, no combining for you).

btw. No cash back(can be 10%+), No CC pts (can be 4.5%), No ‘stay 10 night 1 night on us'(about 10%) for GC users either.

While I agree with most of your points, you actually do get a free night after 10 nights if you use a GC.

Stolen? They’re digital. They get sent to your email…

Either way, Paypal is pretty good about issuing new ones if your balance hasn’t changed. Just contact them via message.
