The Offer

Stop&Shop, Giant, Martin’s

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer for the week of October 8th through 14th:

  • Get 3x fuel points on the purchase Mastercard gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.

Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

  • You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Our Verdict

Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well these deals are more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery. Stack with Chase Offer for 10% back at Stop & Shop.

Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card. Also note, some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so be sure to buy the full $2,000 worth in a single transaction.

  • got 2k yesterday and received 1x point. adjusted on the call so should be available in 30 mins or so as per agent.

    • these card has become garbage now. used to pay my rent with it but card getting declined and mc agent said it is because site is saving the card details so it is getting declined. saving part is being considered as recurring and hence the issue . any way to encash these now. i have 4 of them

      • Wherever you can swipe. In the past I’ve used a $500 Vanilla Visa to buy a $494 Metabank Visa, which can easily be used online. Obviously it reduces the value of this deal considerably since you end up paying the activation fee twice.

        • Is it even true for vgc? Anyone has experience. I have discover and thinking of buying vgc from Sam's club.

  • looks like the master card gc are a lot harder to unload than visa, normal places I can unload at throw a "This card cannot be authorized" or "payment decline"

  • So I bought a $500 one this morning. Package is like Vanilla with exposed bar code. Very hard to open. You have to call or login to activate. It took a while to get my points, and when I finally got them, it was only 500 instead of 1000. I’ll call them next week to straighten it out.

  • I've seen the deal from 8X points down to 2x points in the past couple of years. Better than none though.

    • I have been following S&S Visa/MC deals for several years and the most that I recall seeing is 4X or 5X. When was there an 8X point deal?

    • Do you mean this won't apply to Secure Spend Mastercard gift cards they sell? I only see the gold card in the photo so you're probably right.

      • I haven't paid that much attention to which MC GCs that S&S carries. Do they only carry the Secure Spend type?

        Anyway, I just checked my local ad. It doesn't specify that it needs to be "Vanilla" MC GCs so I think that we are safe with buying the Secure Spend for this promo.

        • S&S carried both Vanilla MCGC and SecureSpend MCGC. Vanilla is shown in the ad.

            How can you tell that the picture in the ad is a Vanilla MC?

            Anyway, I went to S&S today and they didn't have any Vanilla MCs. They only had Vanilla Visas, like I thought. @guest_2069359 claimed that they "carr[y] loads of Vanilla MC" but there were none in my local store.

            That being said, they did have a MC GC that was neither a Vanilla nor a SecureSpend so I purchased that.

            The key is to make sure that it shows "Incomm" on the back of the packaging as that's what the terms require. "Vanilla" is not written in the terms at all like it is for some of the Visa GC offers.

            For what it's worth, I did ask the CS rep if any MC GC should work for the deal and he said that it should.

            However, the bigger issue is that like @guest_1263508, I only received 1X Go Points instead of 2X.

        • Eric, S&S carries loads of Vanilla MC @ 7.95. If you have no problem liquidating, this is a great deal. But you need a few S&S club cards as they now limit how many points per card for the duration of the promo. Noe that we can use them for groceries, it's a no brainer!

          • “If you have no problem liquidating” is a very big if. Assuming these are like Vanilla Visas, I’ll only be able to use them where I can physically swipe. BTW, you get only half as much value when you use points for groceries.

          • I know for sure that they carry Visa Vanillas but I wasn't sure if they carry MC Vanillas. I might or might be checking it out tomorrow. 😉

            BTW, I only have 1 S&S card and I plan to keep it that way.

  • Seems like these are over forever... used to be pretty regular and now it's been 6+ months.

    • Never say never. Over for the year 2022 probably, but they could come back next year.

      • Without elaborating, I'm thinking never on this one because they can't figure out how to patch a glitch that was being abused.

        I don't think the reason is because of gas prices this year.

        But I hope you're right!

        • I don't know if the glitch was with points for cards or just 500 V/MGCs, but on both counts r: a) they already do have gas points being earned for for other gift cards and 2) I found and was able to buy a $500 VGC at a S&S this week (only it did not earn points) for reasons other than MS. So if there is a glitch in points being earned for V/MGCs then I do not understand either why they cannot fix it when they are able to allow point earning for other GCs as well as they are able to sell 500 V/MGcs as before.

    • These deals used to stop around October or November every year and then would start back up around St. Patrick's Day the next year. But here we are almost 3 weeks after St. Patrick's day and now I'm starting to wonder if these deals are ever going to come back. Still no Visa/gas deal coming up in next weeks ad as well.

  • dp here: NJ S&S purchased 1x MC with milk and points posted immediately.
    Check your Amex emails. Sock-drawered BC got 0% 12 mos APR. which can be stacked with these GC deals for a long float.

  • Is the $1.50 max discount a new thing or only for some places? I just got gas a couple of weeks ago for about $3.50/gallon for 17 gallons and my total price was $0.
