[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fee On $200 Visa Gift Cards (6/22-6/28; Limit 9)

• Went inking today and picked up $1000 worth. I always check all the sides of the packages and the tab on the back to make sure that the packages weren't tampered with. They all looked good from the outside.

  I got a bad batch and by that I mean - when I opened the packages the little, round foil piece that is supposed to cover the CVV code was actually covering the date. For others, the foil piece was missing. Glue seemed to be in the wrong location on all of the cards. My heart sank. But fear not!

  I verified that they were loaded using the giftcardmall website, and then I liquidated them. Rechecked on the giftcardmall website and they all liquidated fine. So be aware that the factory must have messed up and had some "glue" issues, but the cards work fine.

  The answer to the next question that someone will inevitably ask me is: Rent, insurance, electric, and gas.

  • Hey Harcourt, Some MGCs from OD had the same issues. 2 x MGCs with foil issues removed the last 4-6 digits of the card number. Blackhawk has some serious QC issues!

  • I had that issue with some MGCs from one purchase at OD. Six of the MGCs had the foil covering the CVV and last 6 digits. When I took the foil off 2 of the cards, off came the last 6 digits. Blackhawk as some serious quality control issues.

  • I recently had the foil on one of mine that was not over top of the CVV. I don’t buy a ton of these, but every other time I have it was covering the CVV. This time it covered the last 4 digits of the card number. Now I know they must do that from time to time for whatever reason.

  I am having issues when using these gift cards with paypal. They get blocked automatically and I have to call customer service to get them reissued. Is there any other method to cash these cards?

  • One of the golden rules for this hobby of ours is "Don't mess with Paypal."

• Any workaround to purchase these with virtual VGC? Maybe adding them to PayPal?

• Does this work on the variable amount gc? I haven’t seen $200 visa gc here at my store.

  • For Staples it is normally just the $200 fixed cards. OD/OM allows the variables to be part of the promo.

• I stopped buying visa and went into mastercards. The reason is the Visa website (mygift.giftcardmall) bans IP for 24 hours after 4 registrations and/or 4 balance checks. Yesterday I registered 18 mastercards in the mcgift.giftcardmall website, no problem.

  Everywhere visa is accepted, mastercard is accepted, so no advantage of visa.

  • I never register them but I do liquidate them within 1 hour of purchase.
    Today I bought 5.
    I checked my balances before and after liquidation, no issues.
    CLEAR YOUR CACHE and the problem may fix itself.
    That website you talk about can get fickled depending upon the browser.

    • No I think they have more complicated algorithm than that. Once my browser on my home network is banned by the mygift site on the 5th card, I can't use any other browser (chrome/safari/firefox/incognito) on the same computer. All gets banned. Different computer and phone on the same home wifi are also banned.

      Now the fun part, I VPN-ed into my work, remoted into a physical computer located on my work network, tried to register the same card, instant ban on that computer too.

      I can register that card the next day.

  • never had an issue for registering visa cards. I register 3 of them, clear cache/cookies, restart browser and register next 3. I can get all 9 in for one sitting.

    However, i agree i have the issue with balance check still as this method doesn't bypass that.

  • Ymmv...register v at the mc phone/online site. More one Different browsers is useful.

  • Why do you register your $200 MC/Visa gift cards? I buy $50K per year, and I have never registered any of them... I have never had a problem due to not registering them.

    • Registration helps if there is a problem. E.g. if it gets blocked/hacked/stolen/Paypal nerfed, a simple call with address verifications gets a new card

    • I do to be able to turn them into Costco GCs online or pay taxes online. Pretty much any use online.

      • I use the Mastercard GC to buy Costco shop cards from costco.com and I never register the GC.

        • I have had Costco.com transactions cancelled when using a visa GC without registering them.

  • Costco accepts Visa, Not Mastercard

    • Buy Costco shopcards using mastercard, so swipe as debit with last 4 digits as pin. It is accepted in the registers, not sure about self checkouts though.

  • I haven't had issues with registering my Visa gift cards on the Mastercard gift card mall website.

    • I always get banned for 24 hours after registering/checking balance on 4 cards. After fifth card onwards, I get blocked.

      • Are you cooying and pasting the data? You might be going too fast. I had similar issues like you and took my time and it hasn't been a problem again.

        • You were able to register more than 4? The system has prevention algorithms to limit bot use so if you register a bunch too fast it thinks you are a bot and blocks you for a certain amount of time.

        • Not for the mcgift site. I registered 18 in a 15min window and all were registered via quick copy paste. Only the mygift site gives me problem, which is why I buy mastercards only

  • Costco does not accept mastercard.

    • Use them as debit. Done it a million times

  • What do you do with them at Costco? Buy Costco shop cards? If so, how do you liquidate the shop cards?

• Applied, says it will give me decision in mail. Probably declined. Applied for 2 other similar cards this bunch and approved.

• Bad news. visa gift card cannot purchase MO from one chain supermarket this week. It worked early May. My last purchase was May 3rd.

  • By "cannot" did you mean it was hard coded not to work or that the CS rep didn't even allow you to try?

    • Visa gift card coded credit card but it coded debit card last month. i tried two store all coded credit card. The CS rep let me tried 3 times then i used master gift card completed transaction.
