Right now I cannot check my balance or set up a pin at mcgift.giftcardmall.com. I keep getting the message that something is wrong with the website’s certificate. What’s going on?

Bailey

What is happening to OD? Staples stores nearby are all closed.

Bockrr

Opposite here Staples are spread around me in 15 mile increments, closet OD is like 70 miles.

Andy

I guess it’s location specific. So far only one staples around me closed. Still have 1 staples, 1 OD and 1 O Max standing in my city,

I purchased four of these at a Staples at 1801 E Camelback Rd in Phoenix, AZ. When I set the pins, all was fine with 3, but one was not activated. The message from the website was something to the effect, “Your card is not activated. Return to the store where you brought the card and have them activate it.”

Returned to Staples with card and receipt, and, of course, the clerk said that they could do nothing – call Mastercard. I asked what’s the number, and the reply was, “It’s on your card.” Asked for manager, same story a bit more belligerently.

You already I know what was about it happen: I called # on card, after entering 27 numbers, the recording says something to the effect, “Your card is not activated. Return to the store where you brought it and have them activate it.”

Any ideas?

Take it to the store and have the store manager call the #. Staples will probably either issue a refund or replace the MGC.

No luck with that. Manager insists that it is Mastercard’s problem and there is nothing she can do.

Chargeback.

Bring pen and paper. Tell the manager you’re going to do a chargeback and get their name and store number and an outline of THEIR reasoning.

Call card – get the rep name and their reasoning. Maybe ask to escalate to manager “just so I can get the right titles on my chargeback”

You didn’t get the services advertised and you took reasonable steps to resolve the issues with the seller.

Of course, you also need to decide if $200 is worth the cost of burning your store. It’s a marathon game of social engineering.

I’d burn a store over $200. With their turnover it would only stay burned 6 months tops anyway.

I had this happen several years ago. The store manager replaced the card.

Bailey

Me too, but it took a couple of days. The store manager had to talk to Corp HQ and got authorization.

call staples president office and escalate it. Number is 1800-338-0252

RandomGamer

What did it say on the receipt? Gift cards that aren’t activated have a message stating the cards isn’t activated and must be return in the next transaction. If it doesn’t say that the manager isn’t empowered to do a return without his Lost Prevention guy berating/firing him. Call the office of president/customer relations at 1-800-338-0252 and escalate it. They will put in a ticket with the department in charged of the payment network to investigate what went wrong and issue a refund check or reprocess the activation.

Double check the receipt. I was in a similar situation with a gift card from Whole Foods. At the bottom of my receipt the activated amount was $0. Went back to WF and they just refunded and even educated me to always look at the bottom of the activation receipt if the amount is what I paid. Lesson learned.

Staples does not issue “activation receipts” on the receipt so there’s no point to this tip in this thread.

anyone else having trouble liquidating these via paypal?

Kyle

I can add to PayPal just fine. Not sure how you are trying to liquidate them. You can send money to a “friend” for a pretty hefty fee. I try not to do that.

Joey
Joey

Kyle So how do you liquidate?

Kyle

Nothing special. Mostly just organic spend. Insurance, supplies for my business, etc. I’m always on the lookout for the “unicorn,” but haven’t found one.

paypal followup: metabank mastercard says that paypal is a “disallowed merchant.” the way it was explained to me, MC giftcards cannot be used for ANY purchase via paypal.

yes, i know liquidating gift cards through PP is suboptimal. but it was nice to have either for the convenience (could be done entirely online), or as a backup.

FJBiden

Metabank has always used questionable business practices. I always run away from any deal they are involved in on any level.

If by liquidating you mean utilizing PayPal’s bill pay service, any VGC I’ve tried to add is recognized as a “prepaid” VGC, not debit or credit. PP will withdraw from your linked bank account or another card in your wallet instead, even if you set the “prepaid” VGC as the preferred payment method.

Can these be used with PayPal to pay for utilities etc?

Pnyboy
Pnyboy

If your talking about paypal bill pay service, then the answer is no.

FN
FN

Yeah, I was talking about it. Funny, like when Xfinity Mobile sent me a prepaid visa debit card it worked with paypal bill pay but now this or the virtual visa gift cards from giftcards.com don’t work. Not sure what’s the difference in the cards.

plaid-knight
plaid-knight

I’d guess it’s the ones that code as “prepaid” with PayPal that don’t work.

FN
FN

Are there any debit cards out there I can buy with a cc that don’t code as prepaid?

Pnyboy

the visa ones from staples may work (they did work recently) lets say that

Pnyboy
Pnyboy

the speculation is that the mcg code as a cash advance in the PayPal system for whatever reason and thats they they don’t work.

Just returned from Staples 60137.
Rack was brimming with $200 Visa Giftcards and the promotional discount was prominantly displayed.
Purchased one with my new-ish PayPal Cashback Mastercard to hit the $500 threshold for the $100 SUB.

It’s Mastercard this week. Hope you mis-typed and not mis-bought.

probably bad management and too many MSers in your area. Staples in Mid Hudson area of NY and eastern CT seem to always have them.

I have stopped going to these useless stores. One of the worst stores around, can’t understand how they still remain in business. Every single time this visa or mastercard no activation fee promo comes along, I usually go there like within an hour after the store opens and all they say is they don’t have them. I checked these cards a day or two before promotion and they had tons of them hanging on the shelf and nobody was even looking at them. All of a sudden they disappear when this weekly deal comes along. And also their prices tend to be very high so this is what they do to bring in foot traffic.

Novacat05

You need to bring this up with the store manager and/or escalate to the regional level. Not OK.

Just hide some cards somewhere in the store when they’re not on sale.

Jags

Hide some in the store the day before 👍

randomguy

Same happened to my local store. I think the stores just want footfall for these promos but don’t actually want to deal to MSers.
