Venmo Decreases the Card Limit from 8 to 4

Venmo allows you to add credit cards (and prepaid Visa/Mastercard/American Express) to make transfers to friends & family. Previously they allowed 8 separate credit/debit cards over a rolling 6-month period. @J_Turnbow points out that the limit has now been decreased to 4 cards per rolling 6-months, including deleted cards. Credit and debit cards all count toward the limit.

I know some people like flipping out their Venmo card based on which card they are trying to rack up spend on. This changes makes it a more limited option. Venmo charges a 3% fee on credit card transactions and no fee on debit card or ACH transactions.

You can still use Paypal to send money to friends for a 2.9% fee. Another way to rack up spend is by paying bills with Plastiq for a 2.5% fee.

  • What a joke. I use Venmo for spending in different accounts and now I can’t because I got a $5 reward to spend on another card....

  • In case anyone is a dumb-dumb like me trying to figure out when you added Cards 1, 2, 3, and 4, so you can add the next one, I finally remembered Venmo emails you every time you add a new card to you account, so you can count back from there.

  • To clarify: It's a CARD limit not CREDIT CARD limit, right? i.e. Debit cards count against the 4?

  • I thought it already was 4, or at least less than 8. Did they raise it a year or two AGO?

    • I believe the old limit was actually 6, not 8. But it has certainly been reduced to 4. Learned that after trying to add >4 MCGCs... for the record, MCGCs load normally (like a VGC) at Dollar General via Serve.
