Our Verdict

The Propel card was revamped last year, and has maintained a steady 30,000 points signup bonus with $3,000 of spend in 3 months. That offer is still around, they’ve just added an incentive to spend an additional $12,000 per year to get another 20,000 points.

If you plan on redeeming at 1 cent-per-point, it’s not a bad deal, but also not very exciting since you’ll end up earning about 2.8 cents on that additional $12,000 in spend. Compare that with many cards which get 2-3% value on all purchases. It gets more interesting if you have a lot of travel and dining purchases since those already earn 3%, and with the added $12,000 in spend you’ll land up with an effective earn rate of around 4.8% on the $12,000 in travel and dining purchases.

But where this offer really shines is for those who also have the Wells Fargo Visa Signature card which gets a value of 1.5 cents per point when redeemed for travel, or even 1.75 cents per point when redeemed for travel if you spend $50,000 per year on the Visa Signature card. The Propel points combine with the Visa Signature points and can get the same value. That would make both the 30k signup bonus and the 20k additional bonus offers much more interesting even for ordinary spend, and certainly for travel/dining spend.

  • "We need to verify a few pieces of information before we can give you a credit decision"
Got this message . Should I call or wait ?

  • Does anyone know how the expiration date for the card is calculated from the application date? I was approved yesterday, and want to start using the card with  Pay today. It shows up in my online account, but I need the month/year it expires. I tried +4 years from today +/- 3 months, but no go.

  • I tried product changing my garbage Wells Fargo Visa Platinum Wells Fargo card into the Visa Signature (both low tier no fee cards) but was told by CSR that this isn't possible. The Platinum is a 1% everywhere card and really awful, but it's my oldest account by far and I want to keep it around for the credit boost. Would have been nice to get some utility out of that card to get the 50% redemption bonus on this or the Propel World offer. Bummer.

    • WF doesn't do product changes - they will close your hold account and open a new one (so you completely lose the AAoA benefit)

      • That’s incorrect. WF does allow product change even from Visa to their Amex. But you have to be eligible, criteria of eligibility is unknown. Basically the computer system has to allow it

    • On a similar note- does anyone know if Wells Fargo is known to bundle credit pulls if you apply for multiple cards at once?

      • I don’t think you can be approved for more than one wells card at a time. They have a six month policy IIRC

  • I wonder if this killed the will-it-ever-die 40k bonus on the Propel World. I just called in today to apply to for the 40k World and the rep could not confirm any bonus on it.

  • Approved for this card last October - already hit my min spend for 30K points. Just e-mailed WF and they confirmed that I am indeed eligible for the 20K additional points on $15K spend. This card also has a 9 month 0% intro APR, so if you've got a high-interest option there's the ability to earn some extra on the $15K spend as well.

    • Imagine MS with Serve Reloads of Amex network cards... I wonder if you could do this to get some extra spend for the $15,000

    • The question is whether WF will care not Amex -- not sure the answer to that either.

      • I MSed the entire 3K through GCM for the SUB on the Propel World last year without any issues.

  • How does the Visa Signature card thing work? I am guessing you need to wait 15 months after getting that card to get this right?
