[Expired] KeyBank $200 Checking Promotion, No Monthly Fees [AK, CO, ID, IN, ME, MI, NY, OH, OR, UT, VT, or WA only]

Update: Those in New York are having troubles with this promotion, they get an error. Not sure what is causing this problem, but it’s not the same error people get when they are outside the promo area so hold tight and it should be fixed. Update 2: If you live in New York, just use a different zip code to get to the application page and then enter in your NY details. Thanks to David for this tip. Hat tip to Danny Deal Guru for letting me know about the updated promo.

Avoiding Fees

Hassle Free Checking Account

The best account to open for this bonus is the Hassle Free Checking account which has no monthly fees or monthly minimums.

Early Account Termination Fee $25

If you close your account within 180 days, you are required to pay an early account closure fee of $25

Our Verdict

KeyBank offers a lot of bank promotions, but $200 is as high as they get. This bonus is actually better than previous bonuses because you can open the hassle free checking account, which as the name suggests saves you a lot of hassle in trying to keep the account fee free. If I lived within the service area I’d jump on this deal, here is how I’d do it:

  • Open hassle free checking account, using a rewards credit card with the cash advance limit set to $0 and fund it with $100
  • Add $1,000 in funds using a transfer from another bank account, this should trigger the direct deposit requirement and cause the bonus to post
  • Wait for my bonus to post
  • Wait 180 days from account opening to avoid early account termination fee
  • Close account
  • Wait 12 months and repeat

Even though this is geographically limited, I’m going to add it to our list of the best bank bonuses as a lot of people should still be able to take advantage of it. We’ve also recently completely revamped our master post on bank bonues which lists all bonuses currently available to consumers, we’ve added this bonus to that list.

  • Looks like the promotion has been updated and raised to $300 using the same link but with slightly different terms.

  • Account opened on 5/26, bonus posted on 6/25.

Can anyone tell me whether these accounts can be closed online after the 6 months are up, or is it necessary to go to a branch?

  • $1000 ACH transfer deposited from Ally on 5/28. $200 bonus posted today, 6/25. Happy Customer!

  • I tried to apply online but it was rejected.

"Sorry, we are unable to open the account you requested online at this time.

We regret that we are unable to open the account you requested online. Please visit your local KeyBank branch to apply in person."

Does anyone know the reason? I'm not a US citizen but I do live in the US.

  • Datapoint: used and ACH push from my CapOne 360 Savings account for $1000, and saw the bonus post about 5 weeks later.

  • Anybody know if I should leave the transferred $1000 in Key Bank for a certain amount of time before safely transferring it back? Don't want to affect triggering the bonus.

    • I think you can pull the cash out at any time. Typically when there is a time requirement, the Terms and Conditions will explicitly say that you have to keep the funds in the account for a set period of time. In this case, the T&C are silent. Furthermore, the bonus is intended to attract customers who will use the account in a normal fashion as their primary checking account, and for most people when their paycheck hits the account via direct deposit, they spend the funds over the course of a few weeks.

  • Opened online on 3/30/15, funded $100 with Barclays card
Funded with $1,000 ACH transfer from Chase on 4/3/15
    $200 bonus received 5/28/15
    Plan to close on 10/1/15

To separately answer InquisitivePerson's question -- no there is no fee to withdraw via ACH.

  • Does anybody know if there is an external transfer fee to move the money out?

  • FYI, there's a targeted offer being send snail-mail for $500 for opening checking + money market acct, depositing 15K into mm and keeping for 90 days.
