The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Open a new personal checking & savings account at a TD Bank location, opt for a debit and enroll in online banking and you will receive a FitBit Flex.

The Fine Print

  • Valid until March 7th, 2015 or while stocks last
  • Limit of one FitBit Flex per customer
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them. The value that TD Bank will assign to the Fitbit flex is currently unknown, but it’s currently $99.95 on Amazon.

Avoiding Fees

Keep in mind you need to open both a checking & savings account, the easiest checking account to keep fee free is the TD Convenience. The easiest saving account to keep fee free is the TD Simple Savings account.

TD Convenience $15 Monthly Fee

TD Bank waives the monthly fee on this account as long as you have a minimum balance of at least $100

TD Simple Savings $5 Monthly Fee

TD bank will waive the monthly fee on this account as long as you have a minimum balance of $300 or have a linked checking account and transfer at least $25 per month.

Early Account Termination Fee

In their online fee schedule, there is no mention of an early account termination fee. Whereas on this help page they say there is an early account termination fee of $15 if you close the account within 90 days. I am overly cautious, so we’ve listed the early account termination fee as $15.

Our Verdict

This bank bonus really has two things going for it:

  • The requirements are ridiculously easy to reach
  • You receive your bonus straight away

It also has two things against it:

  • The value of the bonus is less than $100, I always try to get at least a $100 in value per bank bonus.
  • You’re not sure what TD Bank will value the Fitbit Flex at for tax purposes

I’m not going to complete this bonus because I don’t live within the service area (I also already own a fitbit Flex, they are pretty cool but I hate having to remember to charge it once or so a week) but it might be a good idea for some. Especially those who don’t like messing around with direct deposits for bank bonuses. I’d recommend looking at this list of better bonuses first, that way you can see if there are any you might like better.

It also might be worth waiting for a better bonus to come along, TD Bank looks to be trying to grab a foot hold in the US market with increased sign up bonuses on their credit cards as well as this checking/savings bonus.

  • That $15 early termination fee is for the Canadian company. You will notice it links to the TD Canada Trust (the Canadian branch of the bank) fee schedule which does list that fee. The US branch does not have this fee.

    • They had a $100 bonus for their cc on and off last year, and I recall a cash bonus for this checking/savings combo but can't recall the value.

      • I'll probably wait then since I ordered a Fitbit Zip online literally one day before I found out about this promotion last week.
