Amex Offers: Overstock.com Get $30 or 3,000 MR with $150 Purchase [Targeted]

The Offer

Amex released a targeted offer for Overstock.com:

  • Get $30 back or 3,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $150 or more at overstock.com

The Fine Print

  • Valid through 9/4/17
  • $150 can be purchase in one transaction or combined across multiple transactions
  • Valid online only
  • Excludes corporate gift card purchases
  • Valid only on US website
  • Excludes Coastal Contacts purchases, O.biz, Supplier Oasis and Klarna purchases

Our Verdict

Overstock is a valuable merchants since they sell just about everything. This offer seems to be well targeted; I only got it on three of my cards (all cards of one specific AU). Mine were Blue Cash cards and got the $30 back offer, but others got the 3,000 MR offer on select MR cards.

Especially interesting here is that overstock.com sells Overstock gift cards and e-gift cards. I bought a $150 Overstock e-gift card and got an instant Congrats email from Amex. The public rates are just 80% or less, but depending on your selling relationships, there might be a small profit for resale. Buying a gift card is also a good way to lock the discount in for the future and to use (presumably) multiple $150 offers on a single purchase.

Remember to go through a shopping portal for Overstock purchases. Note, it probably won’t work for gift card purchases, as per the portal terms.

Another Amex Offer I noticed in my login is to get a bonus MR point for each $1 spent at staples.com. I assume most people use INK for Staples, but it’s worth mentioning.

  • I was going to use this today before it expires. but found out it is useless for me. Overstock ships to Hawaii but not gift cards. And even though they email the gift card, if you have a Hawaii (or non-continental US) address, they won't process e-gift card order.

  • Were the Overstock egift cards checked out on the Overstock website or GiftCardMall? I just tried purchasing 3x $50 Overstock eGC and it went through GiftCardMall. Got the gift cards instantly but of course no AMEX congrats email yet.

  • I saw the offers yesterday on two of my cards. i didn't add them, and when I looked today, they were no longer offered. I guess, considering the complaints in this thread, I didn't miss anything.

      • I got the "Congrats..." email from Amex . Do you have DPs that the offer remains valid ?

        • It once worked for me (though you won't get Congrats the second time, credit should post fine).

  • Got an email about each order this evening asking me to call a phone number re the order. Also had voicemail . Could not get out of meeting in time to call them back before they closed for the evening. Will see what happens when I call tomorrow

      • well I couldn't call until 9 am EST this morning Francis--but I have called and it's fraud prevention department, they verified a few things and said they'll arrive today.

        • received the electronic git cards a couple of hours after I spoike with fraud prevention

  • Had it on three cards . Ordered three giftcards. Orders confirmed and email from Amex "you used the offer" but now it's 24 hours and still no e-gift cards in my mail. Anybody get them yet?

    • Beth, I am having the exact problem. Talking with customer service went nowhere other than telling me they take up to 24 hours to deliver. I wonder if they are going to start cancelling orders?

      Does anyone else have a different experience?

    Logged on. Saw the Overstock $150/3000point offer on PRG.
    Checked four other cards. No offer.
    Went back to PRG, offer gone.
    Tried different browsers and even old interface, no luck.
    I got nothing now.
