Our Verdict

If you have the free shipping plan with Amex, and you use a promo code to take off the $3.95 activation fee, then you can order $100 gift card and pay $95, a savings of $5. I don’t know of any promo codes currently – they come-and-go, hopefully there’ll be one soon. (Update: see comments for possible promo codes.)

Bummer that they switched it from the previous offers of $10 off $200 to the current offer of $5 off $100. This current offer is mainly useful if you have an easy way to use up $100 Amex gift cards, and even then it may not be worth the hassle.

A few months back, I had success getting portal cashback from Topcashback when using a promo code on small Amex gift card orders. It could be that gift cards $200 or less are processed separately and are eligible for portal cashback, despite the terms indicating otherwise. This seems to be YMMV as many in the comments experienced otherwise, and it may have stopped working by now, in any case. Can’t hurt to try.

  • Can I use this to fulfill my minimum spend requirement for my Delta gold card? Just buy a $2000 gift card?

    • It's $5 off $100. If you buy $100 gift card, that can count toward your minimum spend (at least $95 of it will count).

  • If you can't waive the shipping fee (ie-if I don't want to sign up for the free shipping trial), then this promo might not be worth it because $5 isn't much.

  • This does not code as a cash adavance, does it? I think promo code "Phone" also works.

  • How to get free shipping? Code takes off $3.95 but it's still $105.95 with shipping. If I can get free shipping, could I then use AMEX GC's on PayPal to essentially pay a portion of my rent and get a $5 discount? Thx

    • A lot of people paid the $99 for a whole year of "free shipping". With free shipping, this might make sense. The $10 off $200 was better, and still, it was a big hassle.
