Our Verdict

Nice bonus as it’s so big, might be able to stack with a referral as well for another $75. When that is confirmed we will create a referral thread, please do not share your referrals in the comments below. Meeting the direct deposit requirement will be tough for some, but we will still be adding this to our list of the best checking account bonuses.

  • Applied and received the following message - really strange, first time I applied.

"We're unable to continue. You have reached maximum number of allowed application submissions within a 30 day period."

  • OOS - Minnesota (MN). Applied once with my Transunion frozen. Tried again with it thawed. Tried AGAIN with the freeze totally removed (never had to do that one before). Auto-reject with this message: "We're unable to open this account - We are unable to open an account for you at this time. Detailed information about this decision is linked below. This will further explain our decision."

  • I applied on June 30th and got call from CSR on July 3rd asking to email them the documents. As many mentioned they are catching up very slowly mostly because of all manual work.

  • @2 @6 Per the Account Agreement and Disclosures, there's a $20 fee if the account is closed within the first 90 days

The online application didn’t work for me — it redirected me to visit a branch. I walked into a local TBK branch and got the account opened in about 15 minutes. The process was simple: filled out a one-page paper application, the banker entered the info into their system, and the account was opened. No ChexSystems pull — my Chex was actually frozen at the time.

The banker proactively mentioned the referral bonus and confirmed it was stackable with the main promotion. I had already registered through a ReferLive link from a fellow DoC member before going, so I was covered on that front. The banker also confirmed that no promo code is needed — all new AIM Checking accounts that meet the requirements are eligible for the bonus, whether opened online or in-branch.

The online application link is a bit hidden: go to the upper right corner of the promo page and click “Open Account.” On the next page, choose “AIM Checking” and proceed with the application from there.

  • I applied in NC from my mobile phone, with my WiFi off, and was declined because of TransUnion. Everything is unfrozen. Is there a workaround to try?

        • Plenty of browsers to try. Did you try incognito too? If it doesn't like Chrome, give Edge a try just for sh*ts and giggles. On wifi and off, etc.

          • I just tried Edge on my laptop - declined again. Do I get an EWS or Chex pull each time I apply?

          • I had an EWS pull when I applied initially but nothing when I submitted my savings application (yet)

          • Which monitoring service are you using for EWS pulls? I get alerts from MyIDCare for openings, but not pulls.

          • Good point maybe it was for the opening itself. It happened within a day or two . Same OPM MyIDCare

          • So I was wrong. The emails always say “Bank Account Opening”, but the alerts on the website list the reason as either “Inquiry” or “Open”.

          • Sorry, no clue on EWS and Chex. I'm in the small minority of people here who can't even get registered to see my Chex info as their website just forever says they can't verify me. The only time I ever know anything about EWS and/or Chex is if a bank denies me and sends me the info.

        • Thanks! I’m not sure of another surefire workaround then. Chrome’s usually my go to in these situations. Maybe private browsing could help? Also, make sure you’re not using a VPN.

Have you tried on a computer, or on Wi-Fi? Sometimes these things are counterintuitive, and what works for someone fails for another. We never know what actually causes identity verification to fail.

    • Most of us applied online. I'm from Dallas and there are two branches here, but I'm far too lazy to actually go do it in person and thus even I applied online lol.

  • I just opened a new account at a branch, it took about 20 mins, just provided ID. Chex frozen.

    • I'm envious. I also recently opened in branch and it was very easy but took almost an hour. I met with the bank manager who wrote down all my answers/info and then transcribed them into her computer. I was the only non-employee in the branch the whole time I was there and she brought me around to meet the tellers.
