The Fine Print

  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

  • Easy Access Checking. $3 OR $0 if you set up a recurring monthly direct deposit of $250
  • Everyday Checking. $10 OR $0 if you maintain $1,000 in average monthly balances5 or set up a recurring monthly direct deposit of $750.
  • Prestige Checking. $12 OR $0 if you maintain $2,000 in average monthly balances.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is an early account termination fee of $25 if closed within 6 months.

Our Verdict

$500 checking bonus is very good as it’s not difficult to meet the requirements to keep the account fee free. $200 savings bonus is worth doing as well as you only need to tie up funds for ~two months. Will add these to our best bank bonuses. I’d be surprised if these offers don’t get pulled early so sign up ASAP if interested.

  • DP:
Prestige Checking and Savings accounts opened in Ft. Lauderdale branch on 1/29/25. Funded each with ~$30 cash.

Real DD from employer of $2500+ in March and April. Called banker to change account type to Easy Access checking to reduce monthly fee to $3 for remaining 3 months.

Savings: Deposited $8000+ by 2/28/25, held until April statement cycle.
Transferred out majority of funds from both accounts via ACH pull.

On 5/9/25, $500 bonus deposited in Checking, and $200 bonus in Savings.

Will attempt to close this week now that 6 months have passed since account opening. The app sucks so bad 😭

  • Anyone moving our money out of the saving account after bonus is posted? Wondering how much should I keep in there without incurring fees or provoking a clawback of bonus. $8k is a lot to keep in there for 6 months. Thanks!

    • @guest_2104826 You can downgrade to Popular Savings after receiving the bonus. That account type only requires $500 to avoid the $4 monthly fee.

  • Just wanted to chime in here I pulled my Chex report to see if CIT was watching what I was doing and I found out popular has been in my soft inquires 8 times since they closed my account back in February. I recently was denied for key point and the police credit union and popular again in soft inquires. That’s wild I don’t even have an account there they closed it lol

  • Tried to downgrade the checking to the Easy Access checking, but got a message asking me to go the branch coz there is discrepancies in my information. Has anyone seen this?

    • 12/28 Opened Prestige Checking & Savings (NYC)
    • 1/24 Deposited $8k into Savings
    • Multiple real DDs & 12 purchases at Target <$1 (Individual fruit purchases)
    • 4/7 pulled $8k from Savings
    • 4/9 $500 hit Checking & $200 hit Savings

I've opened 4 accounts since opening Popular. No issues with account shutdowns.

  • I got the $500 Checking bonus yesterday. I ended up not doing the Savings bonus after seeing the reports of account shutdowns. Here is my DP:

    12/10 - account opened
    1/24 & 2/7 - $2500+ real DDs
2/5-2/10 - 12 $1.0x EZ Pass payments using debit card
    3/24 - $500 bonus posted

I will try to downgrade the checking account to Easy Access ($250 monthly DD to avoid $3 fee) and keep it open for another 3 months to avoid the ETF. Although I very well might get shut down before then as I plan to apply for a bunch of accounts that pull Chex that I've been holding off on.

    • Nice, looks like they paid out about 2 weeks earlier than they needed to. Thanks for the detailed DP. Please let us know if you get shutdown after your new applications. Who knows? Maybe they are not sensitive to it after your account has aged one or two months. @guest_1981381

According to my DP here, Valley stopped monitoring my Chex sometime between 2 and 3 months from opening. Of course I have no idea if Popular does the same: #2000640.
