Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Priority Checking $21 Monthly Fee

Priority Checking account has a $21 monthly fee, this is waived if you do one of the following:

  • a minimum daily collected balance of $10,000 or more;
  • $25,000 in combined deposits (excluding CDs and IRAs) or consumer loans (excluding mortgages) or credit card balances;
  • $250,000 or more in a Trust account or account (excluding annuities) with Hancock Whitney Investment Services.

Priority Money Market $25 Monthly Fee

This account has a $25 monthly fee, this is waived with a minimum daily collected balance of $25,000

Early Account Termination Fee

$20 fee is charged for each account if the account is closed within 180 days.

Our Verdict

It doesn’t look like you need to actually open the Priority Money Market account, but if you do then you’ll get 2% APY. I think the best option would be to open both the checking & money market accounts, put $25,000 into the money market to avoid the monthly fees on both accounts and earn 2% APY. Then you could set up the direct deposit and after the bonus posts close both accounts (and pay the fees) and move your funds back over to a high yield savings account. It might be worth keeping the accounts open for the full six months to avoid the early account termination fees depending on how long the bonus takes to post.

Hancock Whitney often offers a $300 checking bonus, personally I think you are best off just waiting for that offer to return. It’s easy to keep fee free and can be opened online instead of in branch. Because of that I won’t be adding this bonus to our best checking bonus page.

    • @guest_778924 Good deal. I'll do this one after completing the Citi 60 days requirement on March 9th to move some of the funds. For this bonus must keep account open for 180 days or forfeit the bonus. I wonder if we could downgrade after receiving the bonus.

  • Anyone else waiting on their bonus? Based on all the DP's from this $500 bonus and the previous $300 bonus, most people got their bonus 2 months after meeting requirements.

Opened account 8/21 with an "expired" coupon (it was taken down from the website but I emailed myself a coupon before that) and without a MMA. Code wasn't rejected or anything so it seemed to be still valid. Had a real DD on 8/30. Still no bonus.

They do have up to 6 weeks after the qualification period of 12/31/19 to post the bous but just thinking I might be out of luck since the disclaimers say the offer can be discontinued at anytime.

  • DP: Opened Priority Checking with e-mailed promo code, in branch FL, using OOS DL & OOS home address.
    7/11 - Opening Deposit $100 check
7/19 - Sim DD $250+ ACH from my local FCU. (hoping to start counter)
7/26 - Partial month Statement closes - no fee assessed
    8/1 - Real DD $900-ish
Mid Aug - Built balance up to $8K, but not enough to waive fee.
8/27 - First full month statement closes - $21 fee assessed
    8/30 - Real DD $400-ish
9/11 - Call Center CSR denied fee waiver stating it was impossible to remove standard monthly fees.
9/17 - Reached $10K balance, & $21 fee removal/credit posted after consulting my branch on 9/13 requesting waive.
9/23 - "Your Bonus Hancock Whitney 092319" posts overnight, and appears online 9/24

I plan to downgrade checking today.

Also, waiting on the $100 savings bonus to post. (required $2K balance). Open 7/11, balance requirement met 7/15.

    • Was the expiration date on your emailed coupon 10/31 and fulfill requirements by 12/31?

I opened my account 8/22. My emailed coupon says the bonus will be paid within 6 weeks after the qualification period of 12/31. I'm hoping my bonus gets posted earlier so I can downgrade earlier and free up 10K.

      • Same coupon as you. From e-mail coupon: "offer expiration date of 10/31/19. The promo code is required at account opening. The following criteria must be met by 12/31/19"

I am guessing they count based on first DD date (even if my 1st one was fake). Notice Juicy & I had the same first DD date, but he had the previous promo dates/coupon.

  • 6/28/19 - opened in FL branch / funded 10k check / did not opt for savings
7/19/19 - real DD of $260 every two weeks
    9/23/19 - $500 bonus posted

      • lol. was debating if i should do it today or after my statement cycles. "access checking" only requires $250 balance to waive fee. thats where i plan to convert.hopefully they make @guest_809002 go in branch to d/g since he is the reason they pulled the promo early.

        • Waded thru phone menu to finally speak to a "Financial Center Representative". Changed my checking to "Access Checking" ($250 DD, or $250 Min DB waives fee). Supposedly change is effective today (once they process it). 7-10 days new debit card will arrive, and new terms via snail mail. FYI @guest_778924
          Suck it @guest_776169

          • @guest_778924 my wait time on hold was listed as over 20 min. without logging into your account you can go to contact us and set up a call back. my wait was 15 seconds. account downgraded after typical verification.

        • FL banks welcome me with open arms... On hold now with HW - "we are experiencing an unusually high call volume".

  • PSA for next time: Hancock Whitney only waives the checking account monthly fee for the 1st (partial month) statement. You have to have minimum balance by the 1st day of the first full statement, or be assessed the fee at closing date of that statement.

Called to have ask for a courtesy waiver. Call center CSR said they cannot waive standard monthly fees. Going to call branch where I opened the account and see if I get a different result.

    • Monthly fee Part 2: On Sept 13, I called the banker at the branch where I signed up. Explained my confusion on why a service charge hit. Turns out I misread something, so now I expect to take a hit next month too. But I didn't get mad, and just apologized and said I would get the balance to the 10K. But, at the end, asked if it could be waived since I misunderstood the terms. Banker said she would have to check with her manager. Two business days later, service fee was refunded. (I did not mention I had called the normal 1-800 CSR's already, as I was not sure that would help.)

I told @guest_776169 that bankers are people too and will (usually) do the right thing if you ask nicely!

  • I received my bonus this past weekend... nice easy $500... opened account in June and had legit dd for almost 2 months... now I switched to BOA for the $300 bonus... next is Wells Fargo $400 bonus x2... I love how easy it is to make bank off switching around my direct deposit!!

  • I received my bonus today. Account opened 6/8/19, $250 payroll DD every 2 weeks until now.

      • @guest_786058 I forgot to mention, I had opened both the MMA and Priority checking, but I noticed once I got home the banker opened the wrong type MMA... called Banker, and asked her to cancel just the MMA. She did offer to open the correct one, but, I declined. In reality, I was having signup remorse on that part of the deal and wanted out, but I kept that to myself. I asked about an ETF, and she said they would not charge the early closure fee. MMA closed next business day. I was worried it might screw up the bonus, but obviously it did not.

    • @guest_802117 did you pay the monthly fee or did you deposit 10k$? We’re you able to downgrade via phone afterward bonus posted?

  • DP -
    1. Chex - Yes not sensitive. 40+/12
    2. Applied in branch with an out of state DL/address. Needed manager approval to open account.
    3. This offer is pulled from the website but I had emailed myself a coupon code before that. It accepted the code so looks to be working if you have a code already.
    4. No instant issue debit card. Free checks
    5. Banker said no grace period to waive fees
    6. Banker confirmed you do NOT need to open a money market account to be eligible for this bonus. You can just open up a priority checking account.

    • Hold on , time out. Did you say 40 accounts in the past year @guest_786058 ? You my hero! I strive to be like you. I got my spreadsheet ready to rock and roll. Did they start grilling you on why so many?

  • Looks like they pulled the offer. Wonder if they'll still honor the promo if we already have an email code. I'll be in FL in 2 weeks so hopefully it still works.
