Citi Adds Quick Lock Feature For Their Credit Cards (Turn Cards On & Off)

Citi has implemented a new feature for cardholders, it allows them to lock a credit card via their mobile app and online. When a card is locked, it cannot be used. The cardholder can then unlock the card at any stage and it can be used again. This feature is the same as Discover’s ‘Freeze It‘ feature. I’m personally a massive fan of more user controls for credit cards, it’s not unusual that I’ll misplace a credit card somewhere in my house – whenever I do this I always cancel the card and request a new one just in case it’s been stolen. This feature is currently available via Citi Online and the Citi Mobile Apps.

A Citi representative had this to say about the new feature:

Citi recently launched new functionality across a number of channels, including on Citi® Online and on the Citi Mobile® App, which enables cardmembers to protect their account by easily and quickly “locking” their account with a simple tap or click when logged into mobile app or online account if their card is misplaced. The Citi® Quick Lock feature provides peace of mind during an otherwise emotional event, ensuring that no unauthorized charges are made while a card is misplaced. That means, when locked, new charges are blocked while previously approved recurring charges continue without disruption.  Upon locating a misplaced card, cardmembers can simply “unlock” their account just as easily.

With Discover and now Citi, I don’t need to do this. Instead I can freeze/lock the card and then unfreeze/unlock it again when I find it. Citi also allows you to create virtual account numbers that can be single use or having other spending limits imposed. I hope more card issuers implement user controls for credit cards like this quick lock feature.
